Farm diesel in my truck.....

Cummins Supercharged US Army Gen Set

Hello,
I recently Purchased a 1991 International 2554. It has a dt466. I am having some trouble getting information on what power steering pump is correct for that motor. I know the motor that is in that truck is not the original. From what i see on the tag its a 1984. Right now the tuck has a failing external pump that is leaking and belts you can't tighten. It looks like they have removed the ac pump and moved the alt to the top of the motor. I have contacted the local international dealership and gave them the motor serial number but the system they use to look it up is messed up. The parts guy said he believes the pump is gear driven. Can anyone give me some help with whats correct power steering pump for that motor? Thanks!

The power steering pump is dictated by the VIN...if they changed engines the Good Lord only knows what they did....

So if I were you my first step would be finding out what PS pump is called for by VIN, not by the Engine Serial Number. That should tell you if the pump it supposed to be belt drive or not. I don't recall seeing many gear drive pumps on DT466 equipped trucks, usually there are a gazillion belts along with a belt drive air compressor. It does appear some backyard engineering was performed as the pump pulley does not appear to be square with the fan pulley.

If that is the correct pump then you might want to consider having it rebuilt and resealed locally, it appears to be a Saginaw pump / reservoir combo unit which is fairly simple to fix. I would then get all pulleys squared up. Then figure the belts out on your own. Use small diameter rope to get the approximate length needed and measure the width of the pulleys.

Anything else is going to cost some money and time. You might even go to a truck salvage yard and start popping some hoods to get an idea of the belt / pump / bracket layouts. This was a very common powerplant for beverage delivery, school buses, you name it.

As I've said before, trucks are still very custom depending on options requested and things can get real interesting when someone fools around with a "Close Enough" component swap as I'm afraid you are about to find out.

Be patient, work through it.....

EDIT>>>> If you still don't have any luck with your dealer please get me the last 8 of the truck VIN and I'll see if my local Navistar dealer can look it up for me. We swap info back and forth all the time....

Yes, what Mike suggests. Using the VIN, not the engine number, should get a copy of the "Line Setting Ticket" which actually shows want components were used in the truck's original manufacture.

2554 didnt run that setup at all.. You should have one big pump under the air compressor with a remote fill tank just above that.. Even earlier date ih trucks with air brakes have the system i'am speaking of.. The set up you have pictured came off a early 80's late 70's truck with hyd brakes..

Found this while browsing.

Once upon a time we had CCC chassis with old and newer DT's in them. I can't recall the pump setup for the life of me. All I do remember is fixing throttle and shutdown linkages that rattled loose all the time. Great engine though!
