Hey All~

I was driving to work this morning and it felt like the truck was lugging and would not go. So I stop at a gas station and click it over 3 times to see if there were any codes, and this is what popped up:

P1693

P0216

Any help would be great. Or maybe a link to look these up. Thanks.

Time for a new VP44 injection pump. If you are under 5 years and 100,000 then it is a no brainer warranty. Over that and you have to convince DC that the Cummins engine warranty started at the end of the basic warranty. SNOKING

Yeah..... :{

Sorry, most would agree that a p0216 means the VP44 is dying. The loss of power is caused by binding in the pump. The p1693 is not significant.

FWIW this TDR thread is a very good resource.

P0216 - Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure

P1693 - DTC Detected In ECM Or PCM

If you intend to go to the dealer, expect to pay allot. I have read about prices that are 2 to 2. 5 times higher than what the job can really be done for.

Or... .

Remove any trace of the Comp and the J-Hook ever being used and roll the dice on a warrentee job.

I just changed my pump on my nickels. A re-manufactured pump goes for $1000 - $1100. It is a fairly easy job.

Well I'm out of warranty, and I don't feel the need to change my truck so the stealership can take my money. So I guess my option is to buy a new pump and change it.

That link doesn't work for some reason. So how long am I looking at here before the truck just dies?

Well, to answer your question. I don't know and I am not sure anyone can give you a reliable answer.

I am only vomiting information that I have read. But from what have I read, some pumps go a few years and others leave the truck along side the road for a tow bill in short order. In my case, I had already prepared for a failure so I had the money saved and I chose to do the pump right away. In your case I would guess you have some time, but should focus on getting it changed. I suspect your symptoms will only get worse and worse over time, because that is what mine did.

Personally I would not buy a new ($$$) pump, but if you do you that means you can keep your old pump. Then get it re-built and have a spare. I went the re-manufactured pump route, and gave up my old pump as a core. The company I dealt with was pretty specific about cores. If the pump is siezed or heavily damaged they might de-rate its value or not accept it period. The core charge was $400, so it is significant. IMO the longer you run the pump the greater the odds at munching it for good and blowing your core value.

Just my . 02 cents, please be careful to check around on your own. I can reccomend Rip at Source Automotive, but there are also many other good venders. Check around on TDR.

Thanks for the info, not trying to be pushy or an @$$, just stressed about the pump. I figured ditching the lift pump would alleviate some of the issue with the VP44. But I guess it is just the pumps time. I'm certainly shopping around for the best route.

Thanks for the help fellas.

Funny, I thought this P0216 looked familiar, :-laf

So how come a VP44 is around $1000, but Blue Chip's VP44 is $1,600? Any thoughts?

That is a Hot Rod VP (HRVP). Mechanically, it flows a bit more. Electrically it adds some timing for around 70 more Hp. If I am not mistaken. Depending on what you want to do with your truck it is a good option, but maybe more pointed towards performance.

Good Day I also have the 216 and the 1690 codes in my truck and I know that the vp44 pump is dead. It has been like that for 2 months because DC dose not wont to do it under warranty. But know the warranty is of and I have to dish out the Cash for one. Good luck. Oh up here in Canada the VP44 runs around the $1800. 00 to $2100. 00 Mark

I didn't loose fuel pressure at all, the AirDog runs just fine. Driving up a hill and I started to accelerate and the truck wouldn't just keep the same speed. Even with the pedal to the floor.

I was wondering if the APPS would have anything to do with it? Maybe tripping the P0216 some how? Or is the P0216code a dead ringer for a dead VP44?

Plus my truck only has 66,000 miles on it, seems early for the pump to be dying.

There is some dialog out there saying the APPS could play a role. But... .

For myself, I had just over 50k on my truck
