Now that racing is over for the year, I wanted to give everyone (including the folks who don't read the "Competition" forum) the results of my transmission experience.
I have put 30,000 miles on this trans in my new truck (starting in January), as I not only drag race but daily drive it as well. The trans already had at least 15,000 miles from being in my '97 prior to being installed in my '98.
My current horsepower is about 470. I have roughly 200 "passes" down the 1/4 mile dragstrip, each of those runs starting with power-braking burnoffs and building boost in 4WD up to 15-20lbs before launch. I run high 12's, with my fastest time being 12. 68 @ 104mph.
I have broken several components, but only twice were they transmission related. Bill Kondolay (DTT owner) has always said that his product is not "unbreakable", and to be honest about anything that has happened, so here goes: One time the trans broke internally while holding 15lbs boost on the starting line, requiring a rebuild at the shop. They were racing their Camaro that weekend, but they took me to their home that night, gave me a ride back to the states the next day, towed my truck to their shop, and had me back on the road in a couple of days.
The second time happened the same way, except it was an output shaft (which Bill had repeatedly said would break with that kind of "use"
). Thanks to Piers's crew, my truck went to PDR's shop that night where Bill arranged for Vinnie (of DTT) to fix it the next day with the newly released Billet output shaft. Although they don't work weekends, they still made sure that I was not without my truck, and I never missed a race.
They service and fine tune it for me even when busy, keeping me competitive not only in the diesel world, but against some of the best bracket racers around.
Thanks to DTT for making a transmission that is tough enough even for me !
