Manual Gearbox Lubricants - Interesting Statement

Un-chromed stacks

I've had my DTT installed since March1. It shifts very firm from 1-2, but then 2-3 and 3-4 are very smooth. I notice that when I am driving at WOT they all shift firm, but just driving easy around town the smooth shifts are back. Is there any way I can get the 2-3 and 3-4 shifts to shift like it does from 1-2?

DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS. have you done your 1000 mile service, if not drop the pan, change filter adjust the second gear band, new fluid. also if you have the upgraded 3rd gear drum it takes a split second longer to fill with fluid so the shift is a tad smoother, i was told that it is actually smoother than with the stock drum. that is just what i was told and on the service that is what i would do. but call bill, he knows the demon that he perfected inside and out.

Thanks guys, I've laready put 10K on it and changed the fluid and filter after 500 miles and just changed it yesterday. I didn't realize I was supposed to adjust the 2nd gear band. John at Floor It Diesel never told me to do that. I do also have the upgraded 3rd gear drum and it is smoother shifting. I guess I will call Bill and talk with him.

yep talk to the installer! my trans isnt a smooth beast and it lets you know when it shifts!!! I did have Greg Long (my installer) set it up for firm shifts!!

Ah I love every time I drive it!!

mine about shakes a cup out of the holder, i love the hit and knowing that there is 100% non-slippage. of course 170psi of WOT line pressure will do that

I was told that the 2nd gens with a DTT will shift a ton harder then the 3rd gens. My buddies '02 has the same line pressure set as me (150 psi) and his hits a lot harder. Do I need to up the line pressure?

it kind of depends on which shift you are talking about, which components you have installed and also which pressure is that you are refering to? wot or cruising. i would call bill, 150 is more than i ran with my old vb, but this new one really jumped it up and made the shifts even crisper.

My trans was similar to this when i first got it together. Real crisp 1-2 shift and then softer 2-3 and 3-4 shifts. I talked with Bill about it and he sent me the billet accumulator and spacer for the 2-3 shift and made me a spacer to for the 3-4. Those two pieces fixed mine perfectly and all shifts are firm/crisp and feel the same now during cruise shifts or WOT. We made no adjustment to line pressure, just these two mods and all has been well for 1 1/2 years now.

Realizing there's many a difference between my 99 and your 3rd gen. Mine shifted 1-2 hard and too soon for me. the 2-3 &3-4 were a bit firm too. I worked with my installer (Tim Barber, in VA Beach, VA) to get it tweaked just how I liked it. Now the 1-2 is stiff when you are "on it" and firm when just putting around (not too firm though), and the 2-3 & 3-4 are able to be felt when normal driving and firm when "on it".

That was my personal preference of course I don't tow. The most I've ever had were 720 pavers in the bed, not sure how much the load weighted but, it was on the helper springs and riddin a bit high in the front.

Like I and others have mentioned - work with your installer. For the money you put out to have the trans done right they know they may have to work with the customer to tweak things from time to time. Bill K. makes sure they understand this if there was ever a doubt in their mind.

Now, see why they work their customers - not only is it the "right thing to do" and you get more with honey than with vinegar. But it makes darn good business sense to keep happy customers and have them cumin` back for more. Immagine if I, you and other DTT customers didn't have wonderfull experiences with the folks at DTT. We'd soon be brand X, Y or Z customers. Call your installer, or Bill, or for that matter any of the K. family folks.
