I love this new trans! If dodge made them like this to start with they would be the only light duty diesel maker in a very short time! No more heat problems and it feels like it has 100 more HP with smooth firm shifts. Because I had no experienced installers near buy I did it myself. It is a big job! Bill K set up the critical bushings, VB, and front clutch and set them to me for install. He told me to get a factory service manuel, study the trans section and go for it. I spent consideralbe time with him on the phone asking dumb guestions and he bent over backwards to help me out! He really knows these trainies and the problem areas. I really injoyed this experience and the finished product is awesome. Brian Mallory :)

Good Choice Brian

That must have been one tough decision to do it yourself, but sound like you got the results that you were looking for.

congratulation :)

There is absolutly no better feeling than doing something you are unsure about and having it turn out perfect..... okay maybe there is one better feeling ... but you know what I am saying.

Congrats on the new transmission parts.

Good work Brian, the difference it incredible to say the least. I did my own installs too, your right it is a big job,one that isnt a DIY project. Im impressed that you tackled it yourself, you obviously underestimate your abilitys. Good luck with it,and enjoy the new found power.

Makes me wonder

I too did the DTT install myself with extensive assistance from Bill via cell phone, thanks again Bill and others:D But I find it hard to believe if you took a perspective new CTD owner for a ride in a stock truck and then a DTT equiped truck that he/she would choose the stocker. Why would DC shoot themselves in the foot like that? There is obviously room for improvement in the stock transmission and I can't imagine it would cost them that much more to put in a little better parts, besides with the cost around $40k, what's a little more anyways. Oh well, give us something to do:D Anyways, enjoy Brian!!

Hi All,

I was thinking about a transmission Torque Converter upgrade also... the truck has 70,000 miles on it and after it lost all it's fluid from a hole worn through the cooler line, (there's another post on that story), It may be getting close to rebuild time.

Is Bill Kondolay selling the DTT setup ? I had settled in on his converter about a year ago and haven't kept up with the board lately. I had thought Bill made his own setup ?

Thanks for you input,

--Phil

congrats Brian

On your upgrade and doing it yourself.

I have the DTT VB and will be getting the TC and smart controller ETC.

Question. What is your mechanical experience? I am not intimidated by a motor but I have no auto experience except for installing the vb which is no big deal.

I would like to do mine myself also (no installers here). Did you add the extra clutches and upgrade seal and all that?

Thanks and enjoy the ride

Tom

Mallory,

Congratulations on the transmission upgrade. :)

PCrable,

Some big and improved changes have taken place in the auto transmission after market parts in the last year. Hear are some companies to check into:

www.atsdieselperformance.com

www.suncoastconverters.com

www.bd-power.com

www.goerend@powerbank.net

I only listed my preferences, there are more out there.

The best thing to do is write down all your questions and then call them all with the same questions so you get the results you are looking for.

FEEL THE FORCE!!

Congratulations and welcome to the dark side! I wish I had the time to DIY. I'm envious. :D Are there any hints you'd like to share with us lesser mortals on the TDR?:

I did the whole trans, 5 clutch pack, seals, ect. Bills shop assembled the pump and pump bushing, VB, and the front clutch bushing. I used the factory repair manuel. I work on aircraft

for a living and I would like to think I am good at reading and following instructions. It takes a long time for a novice like me to go though a trans like ours, plan on at least a long weekend and that is if you have help and a good trans jack. Getting the thing in and out of the truck was the hardest part for me. On the negitive side of DIY is that Bill and his people know a buch of little things to look for that you will not find in the manuel and although he will bend over backwards to help you on the phone he can't tell you everything. If I was near an installer that he trained I would taken it to them. I hear that they can do the install in a day. In any case if you DIY do not make plans to drive the truck to work on monday, and take your time. Get the factory manuel and read the intire section on the trans in advance. Which ever way you go you will have the most awesome tuck you can get your hands on in your driveway! It is a blast to drive!

Mallory, congrats on a successful install. It is a lot of work. The changes to the truck are worth it. Enjoy.

DTT upgrades

Welcome to the club. I installed and Edge EZ and a set of DDIIs

along with a 4 " exhaust and I had planned on upgrading the

transmission next but the transmission demanded attention a little earlier

than I had planned when OD clutch decided retire. The transmission

had better than 92,000 miles on it so a complete rebuild was in

order. I ordered TC and VB and upgrade kit from DTT and talked

to Bill several times on what to look for and now I have a trans-

mission that feels much better than it ever did stock. While I had

never built one of these transmissions before I have built a few

hundred transmissions before, mostly Allisons and most of those

were 700 series.

I can honestly say after James N. did my transmission I don't like it all the time, just the time period from putting it into reverse to back out of the garage till I put it back in park after pulling back in:D

My stock torque converter is shuddering now and then under hard acceleration or pulling hills hard in OD. Otherwise my transmission seems to work perfectly and the fluid runs cool and looks and smells clean.

Can I install just a DTT or ATS torque converter, or do I have to install their valve bodies or other components?

What's the opinions on the BD converters?

Will mine hold up quite awhile as is, if it only does it now and then and I let up on it a bit when it does?

I know there was quite an extensive discussion several months ago, but I have not been keeping up with it.

Thanks,

Blake
