Finished install of DTT VB this past weekend. It took me 5 hours and 12 quarts of fluid. WOW... it was well worth it! Solid shifts and no hesitations. A special thanks to Fred and Bill for their help and communication!! Great product.

OK... where does it end? I know. . it doesn't! but thats what neat about Cummins. TC will be next. I'm still washing off transmission fluid! Wifes not real happy about clothes. After the dust settles I'll proceed. Did anybody see Tim the Toolman on Hot Rod TV yesterday?
AWESOME!

I had the same reaction when I installed my DTT VB! The only thing different about the way I drive now is that I have to lock out my over-drive under 45mph, because, with my DD2's, and the 'EZ', my truck feels like a race-horse continually pulling at reins which causes the new VB to want to jump in and out of OD. #ad

If you want to cut down on the mess there are a couple of things you can do. One big mess maker is the cooling line that hangs off the flexible hose from the cooler under the exhaust manifold. It never stops dripping (I'll bet you noticed that). What I do with that after it's supposed to be drained is to tie it to one side and put a piece of plastic tubing over the messy end. The tube goes into an empty ATF bottle wired to the tube. I made a BIG cheapo drain funnel out of on old tin garbage can lid and a lid to a five gallon bucket. Screwed them together with dry wall screws and cut a hole thru them. That catches most of the mess when you drain the pan into the bucket. Then let it drain all night. Put the pan back on when you pull the trans. Then the ATF lake will only be up to your shoe tops.

I see you have a 4X4. Don't pull the trans with the transfer case still attached! Take it out first and then pull the transmission.

If your rig has the same rear cross member as my '95 it fastens to a slanted place in the frame so it has to be driven to the rear before you can get it out after taking out the bolts. I use my jeep tool (short handled five pound hammer) and some loud vocal encouragement for this little task.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, so here's my take on minimizing the TC trauma. I did this job alone, so I needed a way to manipulate the transmission safely without the need for another set of hands. So I unbolted all linkages/bell housing/drive shafts/transmission cooling lines from the transmission, took out 3 of the 4 x-member bolts from each side (leaving the top rear-most bolts in on each side) and took the jack from under the seat, cut a 2x4 to length to just fit the jack and 2x4 between the frame rails and spread them just enough to rotate the x-member backwards about 2 inches. With the transmission supported in the front with my floor jack and in the rear by the x-member, I slid the transmission/transfer case rearward about 6 inches which allowed just enough room to slide the old TC out and the new TC in. Be forewarned that the TC you take out is about 70 pounds or so and WILL LEAK fluid down your arms as you remove it. (If you do it this way make sure it is cool!) Be sure to start all six bolts through the flywheel into the TC before snugging them down as there is some play and the last one may not fit if the rest are already tight!

Anyways, this is how I approached it doing the job in my driveway. BTW, I put down a 10 ft by 20 ft thick plastic sheet under my truck to catch the oil and is a heck of a lot easier to slide around on your back than the concrete #ad
Enjoy, you will gain a healthy respect for the size/weight/strength of your truck's components and the end result is just majic.

Mike, just read your post. Glad to see you have your VB installed. To help clean your clothes, empty a can of Coke in the washer when washing your transmission fluid soaked clothes.
Glad I could help. Just let me know when you're ready for the TC. It too will make a huge difference in the way the truck feels and drives. It never ends, there's always something more, it is addictive. Also, remember to change the fluid after 1000 miles or so. Plus then you can adjust the pressure and shift points if need be. Jsut ask if you need pointers.
