I talked about this filter assembly we built and installed on all our trucks... . 5. 9L Cummins, 6. 7L Cummins, 7. 3L Ford and 10L Cat. I was later asked to take a couple of photos of this filter and post it and I've finally learned how to do that. .

We did this because of the problems that might come later with fuel issues and the new 08 5500 we bought...

The first photo is the assemble before installation... .

The first stage is a 10 micron with water trap, and the second stage is a 2 micron... They are mounted on a billet aluminum housing we had CNC machined.

We opened the fuel line and installed a 3/8 hose to and from the assembly.

To date we have 35K miles on the Cat, 22K miles on the 6. 7 and I don't have a clue on the (4) 5. 9's

I was asked about fuel pressure in front and after... we measured it and these filters flow so much fuel that with 15K miles on one of the 5. 9L engines a month ago there was not a difference in the measurement, but I'm guessing if the 2 micron filter ever becomes clogged there will be a difference...

I used Donaldson because we are friends with the dealer and he gave us a hell of a deal...

The second photo is of the filter installed on the frame rail and how it sits on a 05 3500 dually.....

BTW - a few days ago we tested the CAT for water and there was maybe a teaspoon that came out as we opened the trap...

Its our belief that we might not ever have to replace the factory filter... We've since had the 08 5500 in for warranty work and they said nothing about it mounted on the frame rail. .

Some one teach me how to center the photo's... .

Are you using the stock (in the tank) pump? I've often thought about this, but didn't know if the stock pump would be able to handle pushing the fuel through the filters with enough volume to do the job.

EB - that was the question I was asked, "if the stock pump would handle this"..... I later put a pressure gauge in front and behind the filter after it was installed for a few thousand miles and we couldn't see a difference in the pressure.

I've had to change my early trucks to the in tank pump, and we've never had an in tank pump fail.

None of my trucks have had the power turned up... but I'd assume that as long as the filter stays clear there shouldn't be a problem. .

Did your 5500 come with rubber or hard fuel lines? If hard lines, how did you make the transition from the hardline to rubber fuel line? My 2500 has hard lines and I've never bent them before.

All my trucks have 3/8" steel or plastic lines..... we cut the line where we wanted to insert the filter... actually cut out a 15" section... .

I picked up from our hose supplier some 3/8" hose rated for fuel and 150 psi... . and two compression fitting... the compression fittings clamp to the truck fuel line, into the hose and to the filter, out the filter back to the trucks fuel line...

Ok, sounds good and looks good. Just need to find someplace to get a base mount, the filters are no problem. Any suggestions on where to find a base.

The lines are two different sizes... . the larger one is the 3/8 to the engine and the other is smaller which is the return line back to the tank...

jelag very nice filter base. i installed my double filter head (10micron/2 micron) setup simular to yours but my base is bolted up to the bottom of the cab where there is a cross brace under the floor. i had it hanging off the frame but was hanging 4-5 inches below the frame, so i bolted it up to the cab and nothing is below the frame know. i also eliminated the factory filer housing and have 20k plus miles with no problems whatsoever.

p. s. i really dig your custom aluminum filter base.
