I have a question reguarding a truck I just bought today. Nice truck, 92 D250, 204k, runs like a dream and with the pumped turned up a little bit it had enough power to impress me.

As for my question, someone had previously installed another oil filter on the truck. It's located on the opposite side of the motor, mounted next to the battery. The one line comes out of the original oil filter and then crosses the motor, into the next oil filter and finally returns to the oil fill neck. Obviously a custom set up. My question is what would be the benifit of this other than having the oil filtered twice? Thanks for any info.

Sounds like a bypass filter setup. These are a filter that takes out particles down to about . 001". A standard filter take out down to about . 015". I have one on my truck. Can you see the filter model number on the filter by the battery? If it is an Amsoil filter, the number may be BE-100. These will help keep the oil cleaner.

With the motor running, pull the oil fill cap off the filler tube and look down where the tube from the filter is connected. You should see a real small flow of oil going back into the motor. The amount must NOT be great as this will take away from the engine oiling. The filter head has(or is supposed to have) a restriction port in the filter inlet. This is a real small hole, can't remember the exact size.

Do you know what kind of oil is in the truck? Many times there is synthetic and the bypass alows a longer change interval. (with both synthetic as well as regular oil)

Hope this helps
