I have finally found a tailgate shell for my truck but it is off a dually and has the cut outs for the light bar. I have no problems buying the light bar but is there a wiring kit/harness that would connect to my truck? I think it would be nice to have the lights and I believe that to pass inspection here, if there is a light present, it needs to work. Just wondering if it is going to be a PIA and I should pass or it is a pretty simple plug and play type of modification.

I didn't think the 06's had a light, on the tailgate. On mine its mounted in the gap under the tailgate. if under the tailgate is what you are looking for Recon makes a nice "fire and ice" led light bar that i just picked up and am very happy with, it simply plugs into your 4 pin trailer harness.

You can find 12 volt power for the rear light bar either from the license plate light or a running light off one of the tail lamps.

Did this on my dads ram when my dually was totaled and put my gate on his 1500.

Install the light bar as it should be and then run the wires down through the hole under the bed. Install a trailer light connector plug (male) onto the wires using the ground and the running light wire of the trailer light connector.

DONE. Plug into the flat 4 female connector on the truck so you will have running lights on the gate now.

When you are towing a trailer just unplug the tailgate lights (don't forget to reconnect after taking the trailer off).

My dad was worrying me to death about not having the gate lights plugged in when a trailer was hooked up until I pointed out the obvious that when the trailer is behind the truck you can't see the gate lights anyway.

That worked!

If you buy the OEM light bar and wire harness, it should plug into a factory connector under the rear bumper right behind the license plate.

Thanks. I figured it had to be pretty simple if the factory wires were available. I know I could splice into the running or license plate light but I like to keep stuff looking as stock as possible. Now if I can only get the guy to call me back.
