The stock tire size on our 01 4x2 Dually says LT235/85R16-E. What is the largest, safest size you can put on a Dually in an E-rated tire? Also, does anyone have any experience with the Goodyear SilentArmor tires? What is the best tire out there, in your opinions?

The best tire for what? My truck is strictly an over-the-road 5th wheel puller that, living in the south, never sees ice or snow. I just put on a new set of Michelin XPS Ribs - an all-steel, commercial rated tire that runs significantly cooler than the fabric-and-steel construction radials. I stayed with an LT235/85R-16E tire as it provides plenty of load capacity and doesn't present any potential problems with sidewall rub under load.

This truck is going to be my daily driver, as well as our horse trailer hauler and our Airstream hauler. I want something that is durable, yet something that won't rattle my teeth on the road.
 
For 2nd generation dually applications - my searching has not found any tire larger than LT235-85-R16 in an E-rated model. There are a FEW tires (very few) that are LT255-85-R16, but none of them are E-rated. I tried the Goodrich MT tire in 255, but the dealer could not balance them to my satisfaction, and replaced them with Michelin 235 size tires after multiple attempts. The stock tire size just doesn't seem to fill the wheelwell enough... ...



Larger tires can be used on the second-generation duallies, but you need spacers to make them work. (Work properly, that is - in my opinion. ) This might also require the need for two separate spare wheels & tires, if you want to travel without worry. It all depends upon your approach to the wheel and spacer type - there are several methods from which to choose.



I would also like a 255-85-R16 tire with E-rating. These will fit with no sidewall contact, and without use of spacers. (At least for those of us not loaded to the max. ) Please let us know if you find any tires in this size.

I was wondeering what would be the largest 17 inch on a 05 dually. 19. 5 ? 37000 on original ameritracs will be due soon. thanks
 
I've stayed with 235's also. I too found that the 255's available were too aggressive for me and couldn't find E rated versions. I drive 99% on-road with less than 5% snow and ice driving. I run a very mild street tread on the fronts for good handling and all terrains on the rears.



Since you plan on towing, the E's are a must have. Sounds like 235's will be the best option.



The ideal option I found was going to 19. 5" wheels and tires to get a bigger size (up to about 36") and would need only a very small spacer between the rears. But there is no way I could justify the cost for what I do with my truck.

I can't justify going to 19. 5 wheels and tires. I was looking at the BF Goodrich site and remember that I bought the Commercial T/A's for my 1997 Gasser, and they sucked big time... wore out in less than 30,000 miles. I've decided to stay with the stock tire size and go with the Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor... . seems to have good tread, without being too aggressive and won't make a bunch of noise on the road. I like that 50,000 warranty too.
 
if you don't stay with the recommended size the tires when loaded will touch and create heat therefore having a failure and blowout . go oversize only with adding a spacer:D
 
What is the largest tire you can put on a 98 quad cab dually 4x4 with 2 inch level spacer up front??? I will buy the spacers for the rear to run the wider tires... I heard 35s will fit... .
 
I don't have any personal experience running 35's, but I don't see any reason why that wouldn't work as long as the tires aren't too wide (because of the narrow wheels, and to keep from rubbing on the suspension up front). I'm running 255/85's (basically a 33x10. 50) on my 2WD C&C (solid front axle) and have no problems whatsoever... I'm not even running spacers. From the looks of things, I think 35's would even fit on my truck, as long as I had a spacer in the rear. So, with your 2" leveling kit in the front and a spacer in the rear, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the reply I have a friend that has a 07 and he is going with the 35s with a level kit and spacers in the rear... I dont think his sits up highter than the 2nd gens, I think it will work... Thanks again Wesley
