TDR MEMBER
OK TDR members, I would like to dive into the wealth of info that is the TDR, so here is my questions. I am going to switch my 07 Dually to a single rear wheel because I don't need a dually at this time and would prefer a SRW. I have a bed and a SRW axle with the same gear ratio. I have wheels and will buy tires. It looks like the driveshaft flange is the same. The brakes look the same. I believe I just need to remove the spacers on the front. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any helpful info.

All you need to do is remove the front spacers and install the SRW axle if you have it.

You can run the DRW axle but it's track width is different.

The housing and axle shafts are the same between SRW and DRW, BUT the housing and axle shafts are different lengths.

You might find another TDR member with the same or very similar truck who wants to convert from SRW to DRW who would be interested in an exchange if you announce your interest widely.

Boardman changed his DRW into a SRW many years ago. I asked him specifically what was needed because I wanted to do the same on my next truck.

Either way, he changed his 3500 DRW and left the DRW axle. The trac width change is very minor when it comes to the DRW vs SRW axle. If I recall correctly, the difference was less than what can be had with a 5" BS wheel. The difference is <1". But, now I'm curious.

Can you measure your two axles for us SVick? I'll take a tape to my CC Rear axle.

Ok, I got off my duff and looked it up. The difference between the SRW and DRW axle is 1. 25" each side. Almost exactly the same as putting a 5" bs aftermarket wheel on a SRW axle.

I'll check what my CC rear width is if anybody cares.

The BS only fixes it if your get different BS wheels front to rear, and then you can only rotate side to side.

I wouldn't "fix" it, if it were my truck. I definitely wouldn't run different BS wheels front and rear. I was using the wheels as an example, because guys already run a slightly different offset to clear 37's. Leaving the DRW axle in place, is the equivalent of running slightly offset wheels.

I'd personally leave the DRW axle in place... But, he already went to the expense of buying the new axle already, so it's only some elbow grease at this point. I'd like the option of being able to put the duallies back on if the need were to come up down the road. But, now I'm assuming the SRW axle wouldn't accommodated the duallie wheel/tires without issues, and I don't know that first hand, and now I'm rambling.

The 3500's regardless of whether they are single cabs - Mega Cabs should be the AAM 11. 5 axle in the rear and the 9. 5 in the fornt, so they should all be the same. The axle changes in the 4500's and 5500's.

The difference in the rear width/axle length between the srw and the drw is 2"s per side/total of 4"s. If you leave the rear dually axle and want the front to track the same, that difference is 1. 5"s, you can bolt a 1. 5" spacer on the front axle to have them tracking the same, use a factory offset wheel, and have the ability to rotate all tires. Doing this requires a set of front and rear fender flares to accomodate the slightly wider stance with the srw bed and front axle spaced.

The Chassis Cab's axle is different... . Very different. I'm thinking the length is pretty close to the standard drw 3500 axle though?

3500 C&C WMS appears to be 71. 8" on a DRW, track width on a SRW is 68. 3"

3500 truck WMS appears to be 75. 8" on a DRW, track width on a SRW is 68. 2"

So, to me it looks like the only one of those 4 configurations that has a different axle is the pickup 3500 DRW. It appears the C&C uses the same axle for DRW and SRW, which is the same as the pickup SRW.

The swap has been done, for the rear, axle and bed changed. The DRW axle is 2-3" longer each side than the SRW. I noticed the axle housing on the DRW has more gussets than the SRW. The brakes are the same and the driveshaft flange is the same. There is a brake disc/drum spacer on the DRW that unbolts. I have not done the front, but believe it is simple. Now I have to buy tires, wow are they expensive!

Thanks for the input, Scott.

I would talk to these guys:

Rickson Wheel Manufacturing

They can make you wheels in different offsets. I bet they can build you a set of wheels with the offsets staggered so the wheels will line up when going down the road. You will wind up with a front set and a rear set, but typically the front one will fit both in a bind (such as a spare tire).

They also do 19. 5" wheels with commercial tires that will take the load of the two LT tires that are coming off.
