PE Box and ETH Question

Called AutoZone this morning to see if they stocked the PF Carbon Metallic pads for my truck- after giving the usual information, I was asked if the inside pads had 2 tabs @ the top or if they were solid across the top. Didn't matter then since they didn't have either pad in stock, but working on Sunday is bad enough without having to jack the truck up and pull a wheel just to find out which pad I needed and then have to put it all back together without fixing it.
Does anyone here know which pad is the correct one and/or have the part number?
Also, do y'all run PF shoes on the rear or another brand? Part number for these? TIA.

i got a 96 cant remember which one but at my store they were listed as over or under 10,000 lb mine where the over 10,000 lbs if this helps

I went to Auto Zone this morning and got asked the same question and I didn't know. I then went to Pep Boys and they didn't ask about the tabs. I bought the Brutestop Raybestos. They had two tabs and fit perfectly. Very easy to change. Two mounting bolts, 3/8 in Allen drive. Took me about 2hours, Opened bleed valve to compress piston. Added about 12 oz brake fluid.

Tom: Question about the bleed valve. I have always just pushed the piston back in (sometimes using a C-clamp) and never touched the bleed valve when changing pads. Is there a reason why the fluid wouldn't just flow back to the master cylinder? Am I missing a required step? Something particular to the Ram or ABS? Just wondering if I am screwing up. Thanks.

Just got my 2001 2500 QC, SB, 4x4, ETH 6-sp, 3. 54 LSD, SLT++ (everything but those lights on top of the roof), White over Silver, Tan leather. Picked it up 8/31/00.

-Bill, The part number you're looking for is #4594. These are the pads for the 86mm piston caliper on diesel 2500 trucks and 3500 trucks. Make sure you get the right pad or they are not going to last too long. -Ski bum, The reason you want to open the bleed screw when pushing in the caliper piston, is so you don't push dirty brake fluid back up into the ABS controller. Dirty fluid can damage it, and them babies ain't cheap. Regards, -Glen Pratt

Glen- thanks for the info. As to loosening the bleeder before pushing the piston in, I read the same thing somewhere and checked the FSM regarding that and it doesn't mention it at all- it just says to push the piston in with a c-clamp. Strange.

If you push the piston back any dirt in line or piston will be pushed into the anti-lock brake valve. This valve is very sensative to dirt and expensive to repair.

Just a followup on yesterdays post. I am really pleased with the Raybestos Brutestop brakepads. The peddleforce is noticably less with nice smooth stops. I had always felt that braking required a little too much effort, especially the last few feet. They cost a little more ($50,00) but well worth the money in my opinion.

Bill Lins, I am going to miss the rally. I am leaving tomorrow morning for Vancouver to have Bill Kondolay rebuild my transmission. My wife is still working ( so I can afford to live in my accustomed life style and spend money on my truck) and her schedule requires that we go now. It was a tough decision but my TC is slipping really bad, I installed Bill's valvebody hoping that I could pull my 5th wheel up to BC. It did improve things and locks up OK but doesn't feel positive enough that I want to chance pulling a trailer so we will be staying in motels this trip. Besides getting whatever is needed in the transmission I am getting an exhaust brake installed. I plan on getting back 10/24 and will give you a report then. I'll make the next rally for sure.
