What is...?

If you need a laugh try this.

Howdy!

Call me a dummy but, I'm wondering where I can buy some steel tubing and just a couple small plates of steel.

I'm wanting to make a test pipe to, "test," my catalyst (see my post about Catalyst Problem? I need help!).

All I'll need is about an 18" section of pipe and 2 small plates to use as flanges. I'll measure the pipe length, diameter, and thickness and flange size & thickness tonight when I get home.

All I need to know is where to buy these things. Thanks.

A muffler shop will probably make up what you need, just don't tell them what you want it for. The ends of the pipe will need to be flared to hold the flanges on anyways, something you will need a muffler shop for.

Down here we have places called General Steel and Chatham Steel. They will sell anything from plain old rusty plates, I beams, tubes etc through the best stailess.

Howdy!

Just to let you guys know, I stopped by Advance Auto Parts to see if they had any small straight sections of exhaust pipe. The guy behind the counter found the smallest piece they had. My existing pipe before and after the catalyst is 1. 67" O. D. and about 13" from outside edge of flange to outside edge of flange.

The piece of pipe I bought was only slightly larger in diameter and about 18" long. I bought it for $5. 69 + tax = $6. 03.

Once I have removed the old catalyst I'm going to re-use the old flanges (catalyst side) for obvious reasons (existing mount holes and exhaust hole!) and cut this $6 piece of pipe to fit. I'll have to buy new bolts, I'm going to TRY to salvage the original gaskets (I don't give a cr@p about a small exhaust leak on an 11 year old car (as long as its really small). Total cost, less than $10.

The Toyota dealer wants $572 for a catalyst plus at least $100 labor. And then I'll have to fix the root problem if the catalyst is not it.

I've got some preliminary information about how to check the codes on this vehicle. I could probably get the codes now. The problem is, I won't know the meaning of the codes. But I figure I could call the dealer and ask them what the codes mean and go from there.

Any suggestions, comments, questions, or concerns are welcome, and thanks.
