I have an 02 auto 4x4. When I go up a hill in 3rd, it always pulls fine with all of the torque, never downshifting. I thought thats how it was supposed to work.

Any way, the other day I was going up a hill in 3rd, 40mph, and I wanted to speed up. Well, with any other truck or car Ive ever driven, if you step half way down on the gas, it easily downshifts into 2nd. When I tried to do that with my RAM, first there was really a lot of resistance on the gas pedal. I had to really push it down a lot. When it finally downshifted, it went all the way to 1st, (spiked the rpm to almost 3400 rpm), and then went into 2nd.

Thats not how its supposed to work, is it ?

Call ATS, Clint and his staff are great with transmissions. I know they will be able to answer your question correctly.
