I've been running the toyo m/t's 35x12. 5x17 on the truck for the last 25k or so. they have about 11/32 tread left and i'm sick of them. the noise, poor snow traction, poor mpg, the dirt kickup on side off truck, the beating they put on the brakes and hubs. long story short the pros don't justify the cons. (I dont offroad with the truck) I have a carli 3 in lift so i can't and dont want to go back to stock size. So i was looking at something around a 285/70 17... what do you guys like? I'm a michelin tire fan, but they only make d rated tires in this size... anyone have any luck with d rated tires on these trucks? i'm open to any tire recomendation.

I am on the fence between the nitto terra grappler 285/75/17e rated

or michelin ltx/ ms2 285/7017 d rated. i have had great reviews for this tire, im just worried about the d rating aven though the weight rating is very high... i dont want to get death wabble. . the nittos scare me because of low tread wear reviews anf the are hard to get where i live. only mail order

In the same annoying position. Trail Grapplers are done at 30k, the last Toyo AT's I had barely lasted 25k. Every since Toyo started making these tires in the US the wear has gone in the toilet.

I am leaning hard toward the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS tires in 295/70/17. I would like a set of 285/75/17 but not sure they make that size. The 295 are a 33" tire and would look fine with the leveling kit I think, are E rated, and Falken is supposed to have a 50k tread life warranty. Best thing I have come up with so far.

X2 on Michelin LTX MS2's. I would go with a "E" rating if you haul anything. You can air these down to 55 PSI, ans still get decent tread wear. I have mine to 80PSI when I pull my 5er.

those are nice looking tires and price isnt too bad... size is right... i just havent seen too much feedback on these. . what have you heard on real life testing?

thanks for the feedback. i have great personal feedback with the michelins but in a 265/70 i think it might look goofy with my lift...

My neighbor burned through his 295-70-17 Falkens in 22K. They were mounted on a 2000 F-350 4dr longbed. Basically unladen w/camper shell. All city miles. Discount credited him toward some Nitto 305-70-17's.
I sold my Toyo MT's for the aforementioned reasons and am now using the new 50K warranted 285-75-17 Toyo AT2's. I like these as well as my old AT's and they're warranteed to last longer. Nice cross between MT and AT.
I bought my old style Toyo AT's from a friend @ 21k. He never rotated or rebalanced them in all that time. Carried a cabover around all the time like me too. I drove them for 16K more and they were maypops indeed but never got the maintenance they deserved until I bought them.

That would be my first choice also but not much feedback on whether they are holding up, and they are more expensive than the Falkens. I like the Toyo AT tread but the last set got 22k and they were blad. Not happy about that at all.

Not sure whether any of these tires will hold up on these heavy trucks as well as they would on a light gasser. If they honor the warranty then it is all good. Have to see which place around here will get me the best deal on the tires I guess.

Up until this poiunt in time, I have NEVER gotten more then 30k miles from any of hte Michelins, Toyo or Nittos that I have run in 285/75/17. At close to $1200 per set for any of those tires, I have been looking for an alternative and recently got myself a used set of Rickson forged aluminum 19. 5 with some Michelin XDE 225/70/19. 5 LRG, which are about the same diameter (32. 5") as the 285/75/17. Load rating for SRW is 3940#. :eek:Oo. The offset is approx. 1" farther our, but nothing terrible IMO. Of course I am hoping to get ALOT more miles out of them, but only time will tell. Not on the truck yet, so I don't know how much rougher the ride will be, but aired down to 65psi (still within specs) and maybe with Sulastic or the DOR shackle flip, I am hoping that they will ride just fine. All that being said, I have not had time to put them on yet, so I'll update when I fianlly do.

I know I'm about to be crucified for this post, but here goes... :D

I have over 35k on my 285/75/16 Good Year Duratracs and have lots of life left. They used to be my daily driver until I picked up a set of OEM take offs off of a '12 and now I run them 8 or 9 Months out of the year and run my Duratracs in the spring when I'm out in the fields. These tires have seen lots of dirt road use and off road use and are often running loaded in the spring. They are wearing flat as a board, couldn't be happier with how they have held up. I also have run the ProGrade Silent Armor by GoodYear in 285/75/16 and had great results with them. In fact that is what I plan on putting on my 4th gen whls when the OEM tires are trashed (which isn't farr away with less than 30k miles) providing they sell them in an E rating in a 17" wheel.

Thats fine for 16" rims but we have 17's. 16's don't fit. GoodYear doesn't make that tire in a 17, only 16 and 18 inch.

The Toyo AT II's are pain to get. It might be 3 weeks to get a set, all the suppliers are showing out of stock. Might have to resort to FleaBay.

The Flakens are available and the placed I stopped have only replaced 1 so far for out of round. A gamble like anything else but to get the warranty... ...

It depends on your needs. If you are fine with the factory tire load capacities of 3200 lbs per tire than they do make the 285/70/17 in both tires I mentioned, which is the size the op asked about. 285/70/17 measures nearly identical (32. 7") as the 285/75/16 (32. 8"). Even though the 285/70/17 is a load D range it still carries the same weight capacity of 3200 lbs compared to a factory 265/70/17 E rated tire of 3195 lbs. If you need the extra capacity than it's a moot point.

I had a set of TOYO garbage tires on my 3500 dually. Did NOT last more then 25,000 miles of towing. My Michlens last at least 2X that easy.

A 285/75/17 is a 33. 8" tire, thats the difference. He is concerned the 285 tire may not look too good with the leveling kit so a little taller tire than a 285/17 is in order for looks and efficacy.

Going back to the original post, he asked for comments about experiences with a 285/70, the tires I mentioned are available in 285/70/17. I understand how the aspect ratio works, and he may very well want something taller than a 285/70 but that is what he asked so I threw in my two cents. ;)

I'm really surprised nobody's started throwing rocks at me yet for even mentioning the "G" word :-laf

The 285/70's are not enough bigger than stock to matter. Sock for all intents and almost no difference from the stock tires in any category that matters. The 285/75/17 is a taller narrower tire that does give some nice bonuses in rpms, rolling resistance, and ride. With a leveling kit it fills out the wheel well nicely and the narrow\tall tire rolls easier and gives a nice ride. One does give up some in capacity with the taller sidewall though where the 295 does not. A 295/70/17 with a leveling kit is about as small as I would think would look good.

Nothing wrong with GoodYear tires, but, just like Cooper and Hankook not much in the taller tires unless you jump to 18" wheels.

Toyo at are available in 285/70r17 as of a month or so ago.

I have 285/70r17 nit to Terra grapplers. They were on the truck when I bought it. Tread life has not been really good, but not the worst either. Mainly they are fine on pavement, but terrible on dirt or grass. I can't wait replace them with a m/t. Anybody want to try them out at $75 per tire around half tread?

I'll be going back to BFG ATs this winter. Haven't had decent luck getting anything else to last. The bridgestone revos sure were nice in the snow though. I'm afraid to see just how few miles I got out of my Toyo MTs.

The Toyo MT's I just sold had 13/32" tread left @ 20K supporting a load of 9000# all the time. Couldn't gripe about anything in the wear dept.
The one and only set of BFG's I had took 4-11 ozs. of weight to balance and produced vibes from day one despite valiant efforts by Discount to Roadforce them.
Sold them on Craigslist and had Toyo M-55's installed. Problem solved. This was on my '98. 5.
