Duramax 2.8L 4cyl

Does anyone here have any first hand experience with the new 2.8L GM Duramax? A friend at work is considering a new Colorado as a commuter and asked me if I had heard anything about them.

No first, but two seperate second hand accounts. Both said they were very nice except that a base trim diesel isn't available, and both complained about around town or stop n go traffic mushiness and slow throttle response (boost lag?) one was a dealer test drive, one was an overnight loaner.

It drives to me like the V6 gas truck. Lots of torque - 369 - and a respectable 181hp.

However.....The most basic of available diesel models has an MSRP of a touch past $39,000 when badged as a GMC Canyon.

For a 'small' truck. Granted the Colorado/Canyon isn't really small anymore, but still. By the time I was done doing the "Build & Price" on GMC's website @ the dealer kiosk I had a $46,000 truck with a 7,700 pound tow rating. I believe the words I'm looking for are screw that noise.

...and don't get me started about build quality. But that goes for nearly everything new right now in the automotive world.

I wonder what's going on with that show concept Nissan Frontier with the 4 cyl Cummins A engine?

if FCA were creative, they could corner the market with that little Diesel from the van and whip up a new Dakota.

Saw a babymax in the parking lot at lunch recently. The owner didn't have anything negative to say about the engine but was disappointed in fit and finish. The truck was actually scheduled to be taken in for a respray it was so bad. He also pointed out the panel gaps in the front. I was pretty shocked to say the least.

Off topic, but it sure looks like Ford is pushing hard for a 3.0 Liter diesel in the F150. Lots of recent shots of test rigs floating around on the web. Probably the Lion platform found in current Jaguar/Land Rover models over seas.

We have them over here in OZ they're fitted in the Holden Colorado, some people say they use a fair amount of oil, maybe they need a decent catch can fitted like most of the diesel utes do here

Heck yeah!..........but then we'd have a Dakota that costs as much or more than a Ram 1500 Ecodiesel......the manufacturers still haven't figured out basics. We need a small, basic truck!

Just got wind thst the Bronco and Ranger will be back around '19 or '20, and they'll have solid axles to compete with Wrangler. Knowing Ford, they'll have a stripper model.

Agree 100%. If the Ecodiesel would have been available in a single cab/shortbox 4x4 in working class trim, there would be one in my drive.

I ran into a guy that has one on the ferry. He said he's happy with the truck. Fuel Mpg's were good until he installed oversize tiresthen it took a fair hit. He said the prower was good and it had morethan enough get up and go. Only down side was the price.

The company that my wife works for is a contractor to Alyeska pipeline and they have started purchasing a lot of the Canyon's with the diesel. The overall impression is good and no problems yet. Of course these are fleet trucks that will get almost no road use and a lot of in town running around......it should show up problems if they are going to have any.
