Ready to Buy Gauges...Need Help

BEFORE you get TOO carried away, also test out a new Ford and Dodge at the same time you are testing the GM - I certainly know *I* end up very impressed with ANY of the new stuff after a test drive. The only real question on the new GM is its long term durability in regular heavy use - both engine AND new frame design. I've had all three brands at one time or another in the past, and based on THOSE, can't complain about their operation in the least. I bought my Dodge for the Cummins - been TOTALLY satisfied with the COMPLETE truck - but the new ones sure are nice too... #ad

Careful, you just might spend too much money #ad

I haven't driven one myself yet, though someone in a new Dmax tried to race me down the highway, so I presume the driver was relatively confident in the power it had.
I am really not at all interested in racing, so I just let him go screaming down the highway.

Sounds like they are pretty strong off the line.

Nevertheless, I still wouldn't trade the Cummins for anything. No sir.
There is just something about that thick rumble under the hood #ad

That's fine ... that's fine. Go ahead and buy a duraspank..... then I'll come beat you in my Cummins!!! LOL. I haven't driven one yet but hope to get the chance soon so I know what I'm not missing.

Even though I haven't driven a D-max I was always a bowtie guy, but then some thing happened, I drove a Cummins powered Ram ! Come on Wirenut, I've still got a Chevy gasser but if it runs on #2 it's got a Cummins in it. You'll just have to fight that urge. #ad

Yes I'm sorry guys but I had to do it. The local GMC dealer got one in, it is a white ext. cab 2500 duramax/ZF 6 spd manual. I just had to stop and drive it. I like GM trucks and I always have. It's a good thing I didn't take any money with me or I may have just bought it right then and there. It was a little too quiet for me but everything else was fine. It rode nice, it was geared just right, and it had good power. I don't see me buying anything new anytime soon, but if I was, I would almost consider the duramax.

OK,... ... Would somebody who lives close to Wirenut get over to his place and put him in restraints until we can have him drug tested and a psychiatric evaluation done before he hurts himself? #ad

A few folks continue to be impressed with the V8 diesels when driven around town empty. Ya GOTTA remember WHY we usually buy turbo diesels, and what their STRONG points are!

Low Rpm torque.
Fuel economy.
Long engine life BECAUSE of low RPM efficiency.
Low maintenance.
Less complex engine design (Cummins).

Only in "Bombed" form will a Cummins inline six match the V8's in "stoplite wars" - but up a grade, loaded, they make up for what they lack stoplite to stoplite.

If ya wanna play drag racer right off the showroom floor (nothing WRONG with that, some folks don't really WORK their trucks all that much!), go for the V8 - if you want a durable, economical long-life PULLER, get the Cummins. But try to UNDERSTAND the pluses and minuses of the two engine types BEFORE you lay yer money down - and don't base ALL yer opinion on merely a quick drive around the block!

you wanna see the diff between stock CUMMINS and a duramax--go to www.performancediesel.net click on web media and check out Brads pull(stock truck) and the duramax(stock)--Brad finished 2nd---nuff said----chris

The DMax I drove has great acceleration from low speeds. However, let it shift into high gear then tromp on it at around 60-70, and suddenly that zippy lil' DuraMax doesn't have much gusto #ad

I am sure mine stock could hang with or outrun a DMax above 60, now that I'm BOMBed a bit, the DMax would have no chance! I don't care about fast off-the-line acceleration, I gotta have a Highway Screamer!!! #ad

"Brad finished 2nd---nuff said-"

NOPE, sorry, NOT "nuff said"...

WHO is Brad, and what truck does he have? How is it equipped, what gearing? Since there ARE plenty of variables in mud/sled pulls, how do the 2 trucks compare on a Mustang dyno that places the vehicle under test against a LOAD - unlike others that merely measure accelleration...

A far BETTER test would be the latest, highest power output Ram properly equipped against the similar best GM DM available from the dealer - hook each of them up to 12,000 lbs and then head them up a 7% grade about 10 miles long, and see who gets to the top first and by how much. Not too many variables in THAT equation! #ad

Gary - This was not a drag race it was a sled pull around 40k pounds for a more accurate idea. The stock truck was a 4 - wheel drive regular cab. The Duramax was a crew cab which already gave it the advantage of weight. Brad did whoop the D'Max's butt and from what I heard he was not very happy about it...

McCross...

YUP, I understand the type of event it was, but there ARE a number of variables involved in them, and I understood the "came in second" to mean the Dodge got beat by the DM...

STILL, the real-life pulling test on steep asphalt, no issues of traction, just a heavy load and steep grade - THAT is a meaningful test of power that REALLY means something to ME! #ad

Can't wait to get my Powershot system up and running, and then run across some unsuspecting PS or DM... YEAH, I know it won't be a fair comparison, but FUN anyways #ad

Can you imagine the DISAPPOINTMENT for the owner of an expensive new GM or Ford when he gets passed by on OLD Dodge/Cummins... #ad

If these V-block diesels are the cream of the crop, then why don't the big trucks run them? If they performed half of what they advertised, every trucker around would be craving a V-block diesel... ... but I don't see that happening #ad
