I have been having a lot of trouble with my g/f's shop's balancing of my tires lately- last year or so. Part of it is user error (not me, for once), old rims, and cheap tires. I bought some Mastercraft Courser HTRs (hwy tread, no room for debate on that one) for the front of my old pile, and decided to save myself the trouble of having to balance the tires and then still have a vibration. So, for about the cost of a traditional balance, I got a pack of dynabeads to put inside the tires instead. If they have been doing this in big rigs for half a century, there must be something to it, right? So, I took my 4 remaining 1stGen rims, (I have the D80 and 2ndGen rims in the back), and found the best 2, which still have about 1/8" lateral runout. Not perfect, but still not bad. Got everything assembled, and took it for a test drive. WOW. I had forgotten it was possible to drive a 1stGen Dodge and NOT have a front end vibration. Ran smooth up to about 80mph. I chickened out after that because traffic prevented me from easily exceeding that. The best improvement was at 60-65, where I'd had the worst vibration with the old tires. Still have a lot of vibration in the rear (muddy wheels and tires, plus it's been 8K since they were balanced), and from the lack of shocks (which got remedied today), but the steering wheel and front fenders were just as smooth as the 04 Dakota.
I would definitely recommend these to anyone who is on the fence or having balance/ vibration issues. For once, I have found a product that performs as claimed by the manufacturer and that lives up to the hype.
