Update on May Madness

Ram meet at Ennis dragstrip March 16th

We Desert Rattlers had some fun today with the Fords at Silver State Motorsports. We couldn't let our distant cousins play all by themselves. It's hard to remember what the Fords made on the dyno #ad
but it seems we had a few of them going 400-500 hp #ad

Fortunately there were a few loyal Rammers present to keep things evened up. HVAC did his usual thing, 480 on diesel, 580 on diesel + propane, and 635 on diesel + propane + nitrous. Oh, he also debuted twin turbos (HX40 and H2E). #ad
That did a lot to keep the Ford cousins from overrunning us #ad

Sickly was pushed onto the dyno rollers by six strong Rammers #ad
Struggling, he gasped and managed 609 hp on diesel fuel only #ad
A first gen was on hand to keep up the good work and ran 235 hp, very respectable for a VE pumped Ram #ad

ok Joe now that you went to the rollers . . where did those extra "few" HP come from. . other than the stage 27 DD's. . time to fess up #ad
#ad

I have a little more time now. Lessee, one 94 Ram made around 425 hp. Another Ram that I heard had a Stage 6 Dr. P package @$6200 [I didn't verify these numbers] made about 365 hp.

Gary, we found a few hp laying around on the floor here and there at Diesel Dynamics #ad
Lawrence and I swept up some of those loose horses and dumped them into Sickly. #ad
For May Madness, we will look around some more and see if any are left #ad

We also found it is a lot "easier" to "find" hp when you guess and calculate based on 1/4 mile et or mph than when you use a real dyno. Drag racers have used mph for years to estimate hp. They have found that mph is much more reliable due to differences in traction affecting elapsed time based calculations. You also need an ACCURATE value for the weight of the vehicle. If you estimate heavy (for example, estimating weight at over 6000 lb when the eggshell single cab stripped down truck weighs 5400), the hp will calculate too high.

For these reasons, the dyno is, I believe, the ONLY way to develop horsepower in an orderly, systematic way. We could detect small changes that pointed the way to other gains. All big-time racers use dynos in NASCAR, etc for that reason. Lawrence was a BIG factor in their switch from the "good old boys" approach to a scientific research program in horsepower development with dyno testing. Dyno testing is the basis for much of the successful R&D on our Rams. If your favorite vendor has a dyno and quotes actual dyno numbers, you can have greater confidence that the products will work for you.

Lawrence and I conducted extensive research into just how much hp could be developed with a basic configuration or component. As a result, we learned to be suspicious when high hp is claimed with components that aren't consistent with that level of power.

Joe,
You may want to look at yer oil choice to find a few hp.

Joe. . now I know why you got that new fuel tank. . so you could have more room in the bed for the "floor sweepings HP dust" #ad
#ad

congrats on the great run... not bad for old technology #ad

here's a few pix-- somehow, they wouldn't assemble into an "album" format, so they're all linked here as individuals.

WOW!!! Holy Mount Vesuvius #ad

Pinestein and I just got back to Sodom and Gamorah (I'll fix the spelling later).

Thanks to RichM for posting the pics on this topic #ad

After a brutal beating of my truck on the dyno, Dr. Diesel Donnelly (who had been suspisciously badgering me to "hurry up and dyno"[???]) limped ol' "Sickly" onto the dyno and after much prodding, (and changes in the weather patterns for the four corners states) we saw some numbers that are absolutely astounding. It turns out that like "L" at DD, Mike Arnett can preprogram the results into the dyno and make it read whatever you like.

OK, I'm kidding #ad
You had to have been there to watch a bitty I-6 small block make six bills on coal oil! #ad
High fives to DDD (Dr. Diesel Donnelly) and DD for there group effort.

Today we ran a bunch of trucks including my lil red roadster. We were doing well with a 35 hp increase on the baseline (did some midnight tuning which the hotel security didn't find acceptable). Next we ran the fueling box and we jumped to 500 and change. We then added a dash of alternative fueling and some racing air for a total of 650 rwhp.

I will continue to work on adding the alternative fuel to the "Performance Diesel" version of the "Twin Ram" and with any luck at all we will be able to reach the seven bill neighborhood. That's my goal anyway.

heck by the way my truck smokes, i prolly was at 3000 dgrees... nice weekend boyz, see ya soon!

did anyone record aggregate totals for "Team Ford" and "Team Dodge"? I'm thinkin' that even with fewer trucks (1/2?) we still had more total HP (and that means WAYYY more total torque #ad
)... "Dr. Donnelly to the math room; Dr. Donnelly to the math room"

(calculated 721 peak lbft)@ 70mph wheelspeed (1820rpm due to oversize tires)---just a couple years ago, 700 was "ooohh-aaaahhh" material. now "ho-hum" #ad
