Well guys, the story goes like this. These last few weeks have been work your a#@ off from sun-up, to sun-down. So pardon my absence from the site. When Friday finally rolled around, I wanted to shine the man up for Dieselextravaganza 2000. A bath and wax job from front to back was in order. I started the bath at sometime around 5:30 p. m. After the bath, I took the wheels off and individually washed and polished them. Time went by and before I knew it the clock read 2:00 a. m. !!!! And the cab still needed cleaned out!!! I decided that I would take a little nap, since we were going to depart St. Louis at 5:00a. m.
Saturday showed us a beautiful drive up there and a great day watching trucks run on the dyno, truck pull, etc. Watching all of those trucks on the dyno, convinced me that "I needed to establish a baseline!"
Sunday morning came around and on the dyno he went.
4th gear
60mph RPM? (tach still not working)

170hp
460lb-ft

Needless to say, I'm pleased with the results since I haven't toyed with the fuel adjustments.
Would you believe that I was the only First Generation that I saw on the dyno! Where are you all at, we need better representation!
I wish that I could of organized someting so that us First Gens. could of got together, but I know now that I met Ol' blue.
I'll try to do better with my attendence!

I will hopefully be representing 1st gen. on the dyno if there were one within 100 miles! I'm waiting for something to come up that has a dyno set up sometime soon so I can show off some impressive numbers hopefully!

Chris,

I saw your truck on the dyno. I wanted to put ol blue on there, but I am afraid of the transmission. Sometimes if I have her in fourth and mash it to the floor my transmission makes a strange vibrating sound. Does any one else ever have this????? I was to far away from home to take a chance. I would cry like a babvy if I broke her. I need feed back from someone with transmission failure experience. She seems fine until I really step on it in fourth.

Don I'm really not wimping out, I'd like to know what she'll do, but I have fear.

My truck makes a "grunting" noise in the transmission when it's at low rpm and I mash it or if I'm idling along in a higher gear. I don't know what it is but hey, if something breaks, it's a good excuse to replace it with something better #ad

Sorry Big Don, but my Cummins isn't going anywhere for a long, long, long time! Hey the only way that I identified your truck was by the other post that you had with links to pictures. I'm just glad that you remembered me and think so highly of my truck! I guess its kind of a thing with First Gens. , you see a fellow truck and could remember everything about it right down to that big puff of black smoke out of your pipe! I'm glad that you saw my truck up on the dyno, I am awaiting the pictures that I had my buddy take. With his help I'll find a way to post them so all can see.
I'll share some of my thinking with everyone about the dyno. At first I thought the same thing that you are Big Don, you can almost see something go wrong, but I figured that I'd have a safer chance with the dyno than I would with the sled!
On the other note, I haven't herd anything strange from my transmission. Before I bought the truck I read all of the hype about the Getrag, but mine still seems pretty stout.

Chris,

I did not say to sell me the truck now, I just said when you're thru with it call me it's sold. Sorry Ol' Blue showed you guys the smoke that night, bbut I believe when you guys came by us someone had there foot in theirs too!!!!ha ha. I was just glad to see some young guys like me and my friends out enjoyin there trucks instead of in some lowrider piece of crap.

If you don't have a way to post the photos email them to me. I'd be proud to post them on my website along with Ol' Blue.

Hi Big Don. I hear you on the vibration. My Getrag would make the "normal" growling noise at low rpm heavy throttle or while idling in gear, but after the PW injectors and pump turn-up it got a lot louder under load. When flooring it up a steep grade in fourth, at 1500 rpm and about 20 psi boost it was really rattling.

Interestingly, in fourth gear NONE of the gears are loaded. I think that the hard pounding and vibration of the Cummins under low rpm heavy throttle is being transmitted to the freewheeling geartain and the gears are making noise banging against one another. On its own it does not hurt the trans. Dodge issued a TSB for the Getrag and its growling that provided for a different Clutch Disc (different dampening characteristics) to be installed if the growling occured above 1400 rpm.

Hi guys, I too have a sick Getrag. Low frequency growl at idle in neutral and all kinds of racket and sqeeling noise when I pull a heavy load. It did ok pulling my 6000# car trailer, but when I went to get my sons enclosed trailer this week I didn't think I was going to make it home. Time to do something,so I've been talking to a guy I know that works on big trucks. He says I have two choices, have mine rebuilt or put in a heavier trans from a medium duty big truck. I'm thinking, why put in another Getrag when it may only do the same thing again down the road. He says he has put in the heavier trans before in a Dodge. Says " look inside at the gear sizes and compare. I'm thinking 9 gears would beat 5 for pulling a heavy load. I'm talking to him again today. The nv4500 conversion is too expensive for what you get and the heavier trans can be done for about what the Getrag redo can be done. Has anyone here put in a heavier trans and what are your experiences? We're talking about maybe a Road
Ranger or Mack trans low mile takeout. Have to look at the gear selection to decide. Any input will be appreciated.

Do the 5 spd Spicers out of the 3-5 ton delivery trucks fit? Some Intersmashable trucks from Ryder have them behind the Industrial 444E, seems like a tough unit.
