Well I signed up for the Calgary Diesel Dyno Stampede, July 13-14. Still a few dyno slots left so come on up you guys in Washington and Idaho. Take advantage of the Canadian Peso!

They will have a Super-flow dyno and I was told this is a "loading" dyno rather than "inertia" type. Also they have different programs for max horsepower vs. towing torque. Could somebody explain these things to me?

I hope this "loading" dyno gives me better numbers than the Mustang dyno I used last time - I only got 176/520 on the Mustang, mind you I only had 3000mi on the truck.

Good to hear you signed up for the big show Rich-it's gonna be a great time I'm sure! I will be into the city Thursday afternoon some time I think-I'm sure we've got a lot of little details to get worked out Friday before the real deal gets going on Saturday... .

I ain't no dyno expert-but here's how I understand it. The inertia dynos-like the Mustang and Dynojets have a fixed load that the truck accelerates up to speed-the computer calculates the power off the speed of acceleration. A Dynojet uses a weighted drum-Mustang uses an electric generator as the load (it was under that cover on the driver's side of the dyno back by the rollers-Andy Shirriff and I got one of the dyno guys to lift the cover and let us have a look). The loading dynos-like the Superflow that Waterous has-allow the operator to vary the load placed on the truck. On the Superflow you end up putting it to the boards and the operator gradually pulls the truck down to maximum HP/torque/wherever he wants to :D. The Superflow pull lasts longer than the Dynojet/Mustang ones as well.

Brad (the dyno operator at Waterous) is a master at running it-he puts the load on nice and easy-no sudden increases or decreases. He's watching the gauges in your truck more than you are and asks before the pull starts where you want shutdown points to be at-if he sees the EGT/fuel pressure/etc. get past where you told him to quit, he'll roll the load off. No worries man... .

I'm still not sure of the towing program-I suspect that one will be computer-controlled load to simulate climbing a grade etc... . they've spent serious money on upgrades since December that I haven't made it in to see yet.

Looking forward to it

I like the idea of this loading dyno better than the inertia type. If it will load the motor and hold it then there will be plenty of time to build and hold maximum boost. I don't know that I got max boost on the Mustang run because it is constantly accelerating through the run, and rather quickly at that.

july is too far away

Oo. Can`t wait till july and meet some fellow bombers and get mine on the dyno for a couple of runs. . may have a few more mods on by then, if the wife will let me:D .

the beer sounds good too. . Oo.

GARTH

Oh there'll be lots of beer flowing lad... ... I can taste it already! Saturday night is tentatively reserved for a run to Race City for test & tune night-but Thursday, Friday and Sunday nights I will be found at one or more of the following locations: Nashville North, Cowboys, Ranchmans, Desperados, hmmmm where else can I get into trouble? :D Do you suppose the fine folk that will drive your truck home for you can drive a BOMBed CTD with any sort of responsibility? I may have to leave my truck at Waterous for the whole weekend with banner rope around it!

Is your clutch still holding Garth? Mine's about as good as a wet dishrag in there now-I've had enough willpower to only dial in 5x5 twice-both times it was just like having a worn-out old converter in there. Hopefully next days off the Con-OFE I have sitting on the floor will find its way in so I can test the limits of my combo now. I can tell you I'm in need of a turbo, air intake system, bigger injectors and some sort of fuel pump upgrade before July..... it's only money, right?

Jason

guys a mustang is a loading dyno. the problem with some of the loading dyno's is that you have to be able to hold max hp for 10-15sec. some people don't want to do this egt's can get scary. a dyno like this will show you how much hp you have at a certain egt.

have fun and goodluck

jim

I've only seen a Mustang in action once Jim-and they were running it like a Dynojet (top gear at a low RPM then to the mat and up to governed RPM). If this one is representative of them all, I would be very skeptical of #'s off one as these were skewed way high compared to the Superflow we were on in December and #'s off here.

You are correct about the EGT part as well-the guy running this one is really good. You give him a set point before you start running-and if you exceed it he'll unload you right now... .

You should try to get up this way in July if for no other reason than to let some of us weak dogs have a ride in a strong truck! :D

Jason

I'll be happy if this Dyno will measure the HP with out the tire slippage I get on a mustang!!!!

It will be great to meet you all!!!!!

holding somewhat :)

Jason, Mine is about the same, maybe holding a little better. May have to warrenty one soon:D . . I like to play in town a bit filling the streets full of smoke and looking at the stange look on peoples faces(diesels apparently aren`t supposed to be that quick :D ). The bosses son won`t even go in the quarter mile with his POS chevy pick-up that he thought was all that. . Looking forward to havin a few wobbly pops with ya all. . I guess I`m just a little braver than you with level 5x5. . :p

Put a CON OFE in a customers truck today, was wondering if he would have noticed if I didn`t put it in his and kept it for myown:D . He was quite happy he had a clutch that would finally hold the pwr he has (50`s and a plug-n-power). I guess the welding rig in the back weighs enough to slip the stock`r.

Would be cool if Jim makes the trip and takes us for a rip down the drag stripOo. Only problem will be that we will want more as soon as possible. .

To me Alex July is coming like a freight train-I've got a ton of stuff to get yet, install, and work the kinks out of before then. Got some non-power related stuff I've gotta fab up before then too... ... I'm sure I'll get it done-but I have this feeling I'm gonna be using most of my holidays before the weekend to thrash on the truck!

Yeah Garth my pyrometer is screwing around too-apparently the leadwire doesn't take well to melting on the turbo :D . Rod is getting me a new one and a spare-so once it's back in service I'll feel better about romping on it. Still hoping to get the clutch in next days off-we'll see how that works.

Dee I'm looking forward to meeting you too-I think we'll be alright on the Superflow as far as tire slippage. I realize there'll be guys with a lot more HP than what we ran in December-so the outcome won't be known for a while anyways. I think Scott's been down there flogging the Great White Hope-heard a rumor he was over 400 hp without hooking up the COMP pump wire! I know once I get my injectors, turbo etc. in I am scheduled to go down there one night and make a few runs purely to make sure all the kinks are worked out of the dyno don't ya know! :D

Remember fellas we're only 10 weeks away now.....
