I just got my truck back from the shop this evening after having my injectors sent to Dynomite Diesel Performance in Monroe WA for (90 hp) extrude honing. All I can say is Oh My!
First off, I want to re-iterate the fact that this impression is based on gauge monitoring, truck feel, and the SOTP meter only. No dyno results yet.
The first thing I noted was how smoothly the truck idled. Much more smooth and even than prior. No knocking at all (not that it knocked before).
After getting in the truck and putting it in drive, I depressed the accelerator and immediately looked at the attitude monitor to see if maybe the mechanic had stepped it up to 4 or 5 (I ususally run it on 1 for daily driving) - cause this damn thing took off like a bat out of hell! I mean like never before. Sure enough it was still on 1. Then I reached under the dash to check the EZ switch (again usually left on 1) because the low end (1000-1500 rpms) was orders of magnitude stronger than before. The boost was coming on so fast I thought the gauge needle was going to fly off. Yup, still on 1. It was at that point I realized that these injectors were for real.
I tried to take it easy getting home, driving relatively controlled as I usually do. EGT's were up about 50 degrees at 68-70 mph on the highway. Boost at 4 psi. Smooth as silk, no smoke, no abnormal sounds.
Got about half way home and the devil on my right shoulder made me get off the highway earlier than usual, on to some less traveled secondary roads, to see what these injectors were all about. Put the hot juice on 3, left the EZ on 1. Nailed the throttle and the tires lit up almost instantaneously. Dropped the throttle as the truck got sideways and I barked the hell out of the turbo (oops, I didn't mean to do that). Nailed it again, same thing - tires lit up like a dragster. Instantly the boost was at 50, fuel pressure down to 9-10 (FASS 95gph would previously keep the needle fixed at 15+ regardless of the juice setting). I couldn't contain my joyful laughter. Watching the gas temps as I accelerated down the road, it definitely seemed to reach 1250 (pre-turbo) quicker than prior. Things were going by so much quicker than before that I was almost relieved to have an excuse to get out of it.
Cruised the rest of the way home contently with a perma-grin on my face and an occasional laugh out loud - best modification I have ever made to my truck, bar none.
I hope that the dyno results back up my initial impressions, but in a way I don't care. This thing is so much more fun to drive, so much quicker off the line, so much smoother accererating from bottom to top, and builds boost so much faster, that I wouldn't take them out even if it lost power.
Way to go Ross & Dynomite Diesel Performance - for $300 you made my day, week, month... ...
