For some reason my e-brake never has been right. I have always adjusted it during oil changes ETC. and it sort of worked OK. Recently it just doesn't hold. I have the rear shoes up as tight as I dare, but that doesn't help. I push on the e-brake pedal and it will go down and I feel a small amount of resisitance, but when I take my foot off the pedal it either engages or doesn't. Usually doesn't. I believe there is another way to adjust this but I'm reluctant to start messing with the cables without some sort of assurance it is the right thing to do.

cable adjustment

I think that you can adjust the cables so that there is still a little bit of slack and see what that does. Mine used to disengage every great once in a while, but not for a long time now, and beginning to notice that it doesnt hold as well as it should. I am going to adjust most of the slack out of mine so they are pulled tighter. Jordan

I had a simular situation with mine, brake did hold as well as it once did.

I lubed cables etc and only got the brake back to normal service when I adjusted the rear brakes up.

I had removed the drums to inspect the linings and at the time lubed the mechanism and sanded the glaze off the shoes and insdie of the drum.

All seems well now.

good luck

Thanks for the tips. I thought it would be Ok to adjust the cable but just wanted confirmation. The rear shoes are the ones I adjust at oil changes and the mechanism has been cleaned up and put back together using never seize. Perhaps its time to do that again. I had forgotten about that as its been a long time since doing so. Thanks again.

DMillard. . You don't get around much do you? :-laf You are right, I haven't either, at least by coincidence or a none family member. Surprisingly enough, there are more than just me and mine in this terrific country we live in. God Bless Don... I sure got a laugh from your post. :-laf :-laf

The adjustment procedure for the e-brake is somewhat involved and shouldn't be done as a part of normal service. Once it is set, the brake shoe adjustment should keep it working right.

I just had to replace my long cable on the passenger side. Luckily, it was exactly the same length as the old one and the brake works fine. You need the picture in the manual to see where to measure the quarter inch play in the balance bar and to get the procedure right. It's not hard, just somewhat involved.

The message you sent to dmillard should have went to remillard. My truck is an o1 with 4 wheel disc. I sent a message to remillard because of the name, not in referance to the topic. :)
