exhaust brake for 2000 dodge

WHO makes aftermarket wheels same dimensions as stock???

We are contemplating (needing justification) to add ebrakes to several new Dodges. We pull 5th wheel trailers that weight in at 13K. We get to the Western states "Big Hills" several times a year. A local Cummins shop could sell and do the install. These are Govt. trucks, thus warrenty etc is a must.

Can the E-brake be turned on at idle to help with warmup? Any cons with ebrake, on a totally stock truck?

Is there 2 parts to the kit (ebrake and mounting kit)? Local Cummins shop quoted $725 for kit and just over $1k (total price) installed. I thought I read older posts quoting around or under $600 for brake from local Cummins Distributor.

Where is switch generally installed? The trucks are 99 and 2K 5sps.

Unless someone knows of BD or Pacbrake dealers/installers in ND . . . can't use them.

Thanks for the advise!

JJW-ND, I bought the E-Brake yesterday @ Sandia Showdown and the unit seems very uncomplicated. The switch (by the manual) mounts by the ashtray/power outlet in the lower panel. Cummins had it for 1k$ and Auge's had it for 675$+tax (special for the TDR). When I had called Cummings a while back they (phone quoted) about the same with the Booster discount. The manual says you can use it for warm-up (I know a lot do it, but, to answer your ques - it is in the manual). The kit has the instructions, the brake and gasket, valve and mounting parts, switch and harness, and the harness for the brake to the switch & valve, plus other assorted hardware. Other than the standard tools we would need for an installation (wrenches, drivers, torque wrenchs, drill, etc) I need to get some of the following: anti-seize, rust penetrant, silicone sealer, Loctite, 4" ball end hex driver 4mm, teflon sealant, snap ring pliers, other minor stuff.

NOW 4 MY QUESs. . for the pyro, those that went post turbo, did you use the raised "button" with the dimple to drill and tap for the sensor?
Would it not be easier to drill and tap the exhaust maifold, at this time, by removing the turbo for the installation - halfway there - (for those that went pre-turbo) while doing their exhaust-brakes install?
Which side is the "preferred" side to tap on the exhaust - front or rear chamber?

May have some more ques later but gots to get to Tucson today. Will be "off board" till abut the 27/28th.

JJW-ND,

I too am interested in buying and installing the Cummins E-brake. The best buy I found was at Mopar4less.com (phone: 800-748-2139). Part No. 82205577 for 98-01, 24-valve ISBs was $595. 00 plus $8. 00 for shipping.

Beats the h*** out of your friendly Dodge dealers price.

I installed a Jacobs kit on my truck last month. Two words will sum it up,"love it!"If you want to get the frost off the widshield, the warm up mode at idle will cut the time down. I got mine at the local Cummins dealer and put in in myself,3 1/2 hrs, fits like a glove and looks like it belongs there. The hardest part is drilling holes in your truck,it almost hurts. I have not seen a price as low as I paid yet,I work for a major trucking company and got the "good guy deal" The only drawback, which wont effect you,is my truck is an automatic. (I spend five days a week rowing through the Fuller-Eaton,don't want to do it in my own rig. )Just put in a BD Torque lock yesterday,I am impressed with the hold back on the Jacobs. Personaly,I feel better using a product (Jacobs E-Brake)designed with the full technical support of the engine manufacturer. Well that's my two cents.

jjw,

I installed the Jacobs E-Brake on my model year 2000 RAM 2500 5-speed a little over a month ago. I love it. I purchased it from Cummins Cal-Pacific in Ventura, CA for $599 + tax using my Cummins Power Boosters 10% discount. Anything around $600 sounds fair. The Cummins part number is 3800780-one complete kit-and the documentation that came with the brake states that it fits '98½, '99, and 2000 Dodge Ram Trucks equipped with the ISB5. 9 engine. I believe that this part number is also applicable for model year 2001.

The installation kit is excellent! It is packaged in four groups and the installation manual addresses the instal of these four groups with four sections in the manual.

A wire in one of the harnesses was placed in the harness backwards-a defect I discovered after installing the harness. A telephone call to the Cummins Distributor brought an offer of a new harness. I opted to remove the harness and reverse the wire myself rather than make the seventy minute round trip drive.

The most difficult part of the installation for me was the removal of the cigar lighter base. This was needed to locate an engine-on power source. From what I can determine, the only purpose of this power connection is to power an indicator light in the toggle switch whenever the switch is in the on position-my circuit tracing found that this hookup serves no other purpose.

On the 2000 RAM the fuel filter/water separator must be loosened and moved to the side to allow access to the 50-pin connector on the ECM. On the older 24-valve engines the fuel filter/water separator must be removed. The kit contains a new O-ring if this removal is required.

The installation directions locate the toggle switch below the dash power outlet-a rather inconvenient location if you plan to turn the brake on and off during your drive. I made a bracket to hold the switch and attached the bracket near the bottom of the dash to the right of the steering column. I didn't want to cut a hole in my dash as I plan to install a two-speed axle switch on the shift lever in the near future.

I typically toggle the brake on ten seconds after light-off and shut it off several minutes before I shut the engine down. I leave the brake on for all of my driving, a mix of flatland and hills, freeway and town. Cummins does advise against its use on wet or icy roads. I've driven hundreds of miles in the rain without any problems. I would shut it off in icy conditions. The pin-20 connection at the ECM activates the brake whenever the engine has not been fueled for three or more seconds.

I have only driven unloaded so far. I always use my E-brake. My front wheels now have SIGNIFICANTLY less brake dust on them at my weekly truck washing sessions. This should translate into fewer pad and rotor replacements.

My best add-on so far!

Ben, Joel, Mike and Tom: Thanks! Exactly what I needed to here. Great prices too. May have to consider installing ourselves.

Found this source on the web can't remember the name, but its a Dodge dealer in Virginia, and their E-Brake price is $540 plus shipping ($20 to west coast)

Got my installed yesterday (started sun nite and finished monday). Went real easy, even the drilling into the manifold (fore and aft). The hardest (time wise - about 2 hours to decide) part was finding a place to put the switch. My set-up wouldnt permit the lighter location (cb and brake cntrlr in way). Mounted it to the left of ashtray on the knee bolster. Had to cutout the dash behind the bolster for the switch length. Like this spot better, easier to reach and control the brake. Tapped into the acc/run line from the ing switch (y2k black/white tracer) for the lite power. Wish it would only lite in the eng on position, may move the wire later to my isolated alternator side power. Like the way it went in; EASY, Quick, NO complications. Now have three hole pugs that need sensors, switch and guage. The ECM connector will also accept an Allen wrench and YES remove the top bolts that hold the fuel filter, let it lay down away from the eng ane the ECM plug is easy to get to. Pin #20 is the one with the plug (mine was red) on the last vertical row towards the rear of the truck. Had problem reading the numbers but this should help someone else if they use the bi-focals also.

If anyone wants to put the on/off switch in the gear shift lever you can goto NAPA and order the following parts:

Switch - PP6490
Connector cable - EC22

I picked these up yesterday. This is the same setup that is used on trucks with a 2-speed rear axle. You'll need to make a mounting clamp to attach it to the shifter but that should not be much of a problem.

Anyone out there know why the E-brake part #'s and prices are different from DC?? The 98. 5 and 2000 up are considerably cheaper than the 99. Why is the 99 model more expensive?? What's different? One of the posts above said the cummins people said one size fits all (so to speak) is this true?

Thanks, Bob

Bob,

The Application Notes in the installation manual that came with my Jacobs E-brake state "Cummins E Brake by Jacobs kit, P/N 3800780 has been specifically engineered to fit your '98½, '99 or 2000 Dodge Ram truck equipped with the Cummins ISB5. 9 Turbo Diesel engine. All parts are included in the kit, allowing installation without requiring any fabrication. " I can't imagine that the '99 would be different than the '98½ and the 2000.

David D. - the switch from NAPA mentioned a few posts above is the EXACT switch that I have - not installed yet - and my switch carried an Eaton part number. If you buy this switch, I think you'll find that you don't need the special wire harness mentioned.

Thomas

Thomas-
Please include "year 2001" for part no. 3800780. I'm about to order it. As far as the switch goes, it is perfect for $11. 49. And yes, I will be making my own harness and mounting adapter.

David,

I would have included the 2001 (so you didn't feel left out????) but for the fact that I was quoting from my installation manual - it didn't say a word about 2001!!!

Thomas

Seems like everyone is leaving the '01 out of the app. notes for now. Can't believe that there is too much difference except this ETH has a different turbo.

dresslered,

As a point of clarification, I have a '01 ETH and the part number for the Exhaust Brake Assembly Group is as follows:

Mopar P/N 05017008AA
Cummins P/N 3800791

This is from the parts manual that came with the unit that I received last night.
