E Brake Noise

I installed a Jacobs E Brake and it emitts a loud hiss, simular to a bad air leak, through the tailpipe. There are no exhaust leaks upstream from the tailpipe. The brake is effective when engaged, but I have no way of knowing if it is 100% effective. My local DC dealer has no knowledge of the brake, as apparently none of their other customers has one installed, so they are no help and the local Cummins dealer will not touch a pick-up. I suspect the butterfly is not closing fully. Has anyone had this problem and come up with a solution?

My 99 Had one for 50k and the brakes were like new when I traded her in.

That is what is supposed to sound like, almost like a cut air hose when you stand by the exhaust. They all do that.

Your dealers mechanics are as dumb as mine. I took mine in for the CO2 reflash and the brake was turned on. When he was finished the mechanic told me I had a bad air leak somewhere

So there I was riding in the bed at 50 mph yelling at my wife to pull out the black knob on the gearshift and let off on the gas while I hung over the side trying to listen to the exhaust. Yup sounds just like mine-except for the old lady saying "you're nuts".

You can't stop the air from getting out of the engine or it wouldn't run. Instead you put a butterfly in line and force it to build 60 psi to push the butterfly open and squeek by. Yep, I suspect it would sound like a bad air leak.

I haven't seen the Jacobs brake before. But the Pac Brake has two holes in the butterfly valve so the brake can not create to much retarding pressure and float the valves. When you use that brake it always makes a sick sounding hissing noise as the air pushes through the small holes. The BD ehaust brake I used for years has a solid butterfly valve on it and when it reaches a pre set pressure, it will be forced open so you don't have to worry about floating the valves. When this brake is engaged, there is no hissing. It just sounds like a quieter version of the compression brakes the big trucks use. Maybe yours has holes in it similar to the Pac Brake, causing hissing.

The reason I was concerned was that I had a 96 with a Pac Brake I ran for 120K before this one and it made absolutely no noise and worked beautifully.

Just to give you a little more reassurance. Mine has the hiss like there is an air leak and this is normal. Great device.

The Cummins (aka DC) E-Brake has a hole for the pressure to get thru (about 1/2" I think - didnt measure it and it "looked" bigger then the 2nd gen). So there is the HISSSSSSSSSing !!

Cummins shop wont touch truck?

What do you mean your local Cummins shop wont touch a pick-up? I used to take my '95 into the one here and they worked on lots of pick-ups. I met guys from all around the state while I was waiting for mine to get worked over. They even did some bombing for me. I'd double check your Cummins shop again. Either they are so busy they don't want your business (read "money") or you got some bad information.



Our's shut down last year due to budget cuts. I miss having that Cummins shop just a mile away.

I have checked with the local Cummins dealer more than once and got turned down each time. Guess my money is not as green as the big trucker's is.

The local Cummins shop here has been sold and is changing to work on marine diesels only. No trucks whatsoever. At least that is what I've been told.
