Hi Guys!

Just thought that some of you would be interested in the E Brake/TCC switch pod that I made. The operating position of the switches is much better for this old stiff back than drilling holes down low in the knee bolster.

It is made out of 1/8” thick Birch plywood with the inside corners reinforced with 1/4” Sq. Spruce. This allows for the large radius at the top and front edges. The top is 3”x3” square outside measurements. For easy removal it is attached to the knee bolster with Velcro hook and loop self-adhesive tape. The wires are then just wrapped down and under the knee bolster then Tie-Rapped tight to other “things” behind/under the bolster.

The paint is an Artist’s Acrylic Paint called “ Ceramcoat by Delta”. For my dash a mixture of Black and Charcoal was used. Believe me the match is much better than that shown in the photo. The camera flash brought out too much blue. The paint was applied very, very thick then daubed with a wadded up tissue to produce a stipple texture. A course/stiff bristle brush would also work. You may want to experiment on a scrap piece of wood for the correct color/texture. After drying a final light coat of Polyurethane Clear Satin finish was applied.

An expansion of this project would be to remove the ashtray, then change the height/angle of the top of the switch pod, blend the left side of it into the area under the steering wheel, extend the right side to just past the ashtray opening then build in the CB. I think that by being careful with the design that you could squeeze in two 2” gages. Obviously this would be too heavy for Velcro so mounting holes would have to be drilled in the dash.

That's a good idea. I just finished the install of my E-brake and I didn't like where they told me to put the switch either. I have the 6 speed so in place of a cupholder next to the cigarette lighter I have a plastic storage bin. I mounted mine in the top lip of the storage bin. That way it is right by the gear shift. I'm amazed how well the E brake works. Shoulda got one 36,000 miles ago...
