I held a shop vac next to the bit whilst drilling. I used a 5/16" bit, and used the 1/8 NPT fitting. When I finished drilling, I stuck a screwdriver magnet down in there to get the rest of the shavings. Also, while tapping the hole, I did the same thing with the vacuum, and then with the magnet.
Then, after I was done, I taped the exhaust with duct tape and then started the truck. I don't know how much stuff came out the hole instead of the turbo, but I fugured it couldn't hurt. I think with the vac and the magnet, I got all of the shavings.
My question is, I tried to take off the manifold to drill by the #5 cylinder. I didn't want to unhook the heater hose and have to clean up antifreeze. So, I drilled by the #3. My EGTs are only 400 degrees in 6th gear doing 60 mph on a flat road. My 2001 HO with my EZ and Stage 2 injectors was about 500-600 degrees. I'm wondering if this truck just runs cooler, or if there is really a big difference in temps between different cylinders. I had the probe in my '01 mounted in the section of the manifold just above where the turbo mounts to it.
Anyone able to shed some light?
