Received E. G. T. gauge from Geno's. They Suggest drilling and tapping by #3 cyl. on exhausts manifold. Do you have to remove the turbo so no fillings fall into it? Also what size bit and tap?

I drilled mine with stepped bits. Also use grease on the bit.

Start small -1/8 then go up in size till you get to the correct size.

The small chips will blow out. Some are afraid it may damage the turbo. I do not recall anyone with that problem.

Some guys hook up a shop vacuum to suck up the chips as they come off of the bit.

I held a shop vac next to the bit whilst drilling. I used a 5/16" bit, and used the 1/8 NPT fitting. When I finished drilling, I stuck a screwdriver magnet down in there to get the rest of the shavings. Also, while tapping the hole, I did the same thing with the vacuum, and then with the magnet.

Then, after I was done, I taped the exhaust with duct tape and then started the truck. I don't know how much stuff came out the hole instead of the turbo, but I fugured it couldn't hurt. I think with the vac and the magnet, I got all of the shavings.

My question is, I tried to take off the manifold to drill by the #5 cylinder. I didn't want to unhook the heater hose and have to clean up antifreeze. So, I drilled by the #3. My EGTs are only 400 degrees in 6th gear doing 60 mph on a flat road. My 2001 HO with my EZ and Stage 2 injectors was about 500-600 degrees. I'm wondering if this truck just runs cooler, or if there is really a big difference in temps between different cylinders. I had the probe in my '01 mounted in the section of the manifold just above where the turbo mounts to it.

Anyone able to shed some light?

I turned on my exhaust brake when I drilled. There's no way any chips got into the manifold :) Wear two layers of eye protection if you try this, becuase the chips really fly. I would reccomend goggles behind a full face sheild - no joke. I wore saftey glasses with side sheilds and I did most of the drilling with my eyes shut becuase of the way the chips flew out of the hole.

I shut the motor off after that and tapped by hand. It was easy get a small magnet in there and pick up all the chips after tapping. Make sure you reach it into the runners a couple inches. I was surprised at how far in the chips got.

I did it the same way Jnutter did. I just taped up about 95% of the exhaust tip. I magnetized a small screwdriver to fish out the remaing shavings. It worked very well.

I just bought a new ATS manifold, drilled and tapped it on the bench, blew it out, then swapped manifolds. Without a doubt, the cleanest way to do it :D

('Course, then I realized I used the wrong friggin' tap, and had to re-tap with it on the truck. So much for my great planning :))
