I'm looking at a few tires..... of course i want 10 ply tires.

does the E rating mean the tire has 10 plys or just a heavy load capability? are there E rated 8 ply tires out there?

most manufacturers list the specs pretty well but procomp does not. they have a 305/65/r17 extreme all terrain tire i'm interested in that is rated E but no specs on # of plys.

or, do one of you have this tire and know what its construct is?

the max load on this tire matches the max load for a D rated, 8 ply tire of similar size by BFG.

thanks as always, jeff

Jeff- In my experience, E=10 plys, D=8 plys. But I've also seen the weight ratings of D's & E's be very close or the same, even though they have differing plies. Bruce

tire ratings

I have "E"s on my truck and new ones on my trailer. I was told the "E"s have the RATING but not the plies. The ride for most vehicles with a true 10 ply tire would be too rough. So they are rated for "E use but the plies are only 8 ply.

Have you ever noticed that tires are "X" ply rated ... ... ..... I'm no tire expert, but "X" plys only apply to bias ply tires and radials are "X" ply rated.

Someone with more knowledge on the subject will chime in, but load ratings/speed ratings need to be matched to the application and "X ply" really mean nothing unless you are buying bias ply tires.

in tires the amount of plys ='s load carrying ability. so a e rated tire will have 10 plys and a higher load carrying ability next to a 8 ply rated tire, the difference in wieght from a d to e is confusing some d rated tires have a stronger side wall than another e rated tire and it's wieght handleing is better, but it does not make it a e rated tire, a d is still only 8 plys. from what i have seen it is best to stay with the e rated tires they will last longer and be safer with our diesels.

Yes. the D's suck. . :)

I'm liking the new E nitto TG's. First snow dusting shows some good traction on 2wd. zero slippage on Edge on 3, ez on 3 at 3/4-ish throttle though 3rd and 4th. This is snow/slush/wet roads.

I'm out on handling still since I have been hauling stuff over the weekend. Drove 200 miles since friday. They handle GREAT with 1500#'s of crap in the bed.

there are no 10 ply radials anymore ...

Load Range E is a 10 ply rating ...

procomp and bfg both make big deals out of the fact that they are 3 ply tires ...

read the side of your tires ...

this is not true about bias plys

10 ply RATING only

Exactly! My new Bridgestones are "E" rated tires and do NOT have 10 plies. They have 8 which is supposed to make the ride softer while still allowing them to have the higher rating for carrying weight. Still they carry 3415# @ 80PSI.
