2008 Dodge Ram 2500 6.7 l. I return my truck back to stock for smog purposes. I had a Sinister EGR delete kit turbo back 5 inch exhaust and a smarty jr. I installed everything on my truck and removed everything on my truck back to stock. I received a p0031 code which was my ho2s sensor 1 Bank 1. Replace both O2 sensor O2 module and went through my electrical wire looms looking for a hard short after about two weeks of trying to fix it myself I gave up. Took it to a mechanic could not find why that code was coming up. His buddy works for the Dodge dealership as a mechanic does side work for him at a shop. He did a few checks and told him that my ECM was bad and that I should replace my tipm when replacing the ECM. Price quote $3,700 I bought crate motors and install them for less than this. Does anybody have any input

Ouch!!! I think I would want a deeper dive to verify both ECM and TIPM need replaced, possible but not always that likely.

If it is the ECM I would take a chance on sending it in or grab one off Ebay.

What are your symptoms other than P0031? That is the heater circuit for the O2 sensor... Did you pin out the heater on the new sensor and check the heater wires for continuity? (It IS possible to have a brand new O2 sensor have a bad heater, or one that fails promptly, happend on one of my cars and since it is the post CAT sensor on that car, I just reset the light an ignore it now.. but since you have an inspection I guess that option won't work for you)... I find it UNLIKELY that ECM and TIPM are bad at that same time. I have been having some issues with my OBD 2 port shutting off, and some random non-sense codes that don't even exist on the list of possible codes for these trucks, and yet the engine seems to run perfectly fine, so far.

I did swap out the TIPM, you can get a Dorman after market reman TIPM for about $400 (there is a $200 core charge). Even the OEM are remans, there are no new TIPMs made for these trucks. I have yet to hear of a strory of a bad ECM, most say they are just not something known to fail, certainly a rare occurance at most.

Did you replace with factory sensors O2?
No I didn't I used Bosh sensors.but I did have the sensors checked and were told they were fine. I'm having no other symptoms with the truck everything has been pinned out also be 3 different people.having the ecm sent in for repair will find out next week the results.

My dad had a dodge caravan back in the late 80's . the O2 sensor went out and my brother said just be sure it's a Bosch. It still threw code so my dad took it to mechanic and he said you need to buy factory as they are tweaked a bit different than the aftermarket ones?

Curious how you test a O2 sensor? just sayin'

I believe checked for resistance. Thing is this even if I unpluged my O2 module the code automatically comes back identifying as Bank 1 never even brings up Bank two. The first thing I did was took the sensor from bank One and moved it to the bank to see if it would track. You are absolutely correct Bosch sensors are garbage I found that out after I bought them by reading everybody's post about them. My neighbor who is also a mechanic came over with his laptop and we did a step-by-step check on the electrical and the pins and he was the one who told me it was possabley my O2 sensor control module after I replace that and nothing happened. I had it taken to the shop. the guy at the shop told me yesterday instead of paying for a dealer replacement ECU that he's going to send it to his Rebuilder and have the ECM inspected and if it needs to be rebuilt it would only be about $500 . pretty much hands are up in the air at this time
