Don or Andy would you know the part number for that manifold you suggested. Now that I have the engine in place I will have to completely modify the heater box if I used the turbo the way it is. I think if the cost is not too high I will make the change.

Marty, I was on vacation last week and yesterday, I go back to work tonight. I check in the shop to see if that truck is still in there, and I'll try to get the numbers off the manifold.

Andy

I told the mechanics at work about your project, and one of them got out a Freightliner parts catalog and showed me the manifold. I wrote down the part number, but I left the piece of paper in my uniform pants in my locker at work. I'll post the part number tonight.

Andy

Marty, here's that part number: 3901683. That's from a Freightliner parts catalog.

Here's another idea: How about using a 3-piece ATS exhaust manifold and rotating the center section downward. That way you could come up with whatever angle works best. This may not be practical, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Andy

Andy,

Thanks and thanks again! I will call the local cummins dealer and see what they can do for me. The ATS manifold is a good idea and I will see if it can be worked tonight. My biggest problem is with the heater system. The turbo sits right where the heater core should be.

Hi Andy

I called the local Cummins dealer for the manifold and they do not have stock nor does our local Cummins depot. Minimum 2 week on order and the price is $583 before taxes. I will check out ATS to see what they offer.

Marty

Good luck, Marty. Seems like there's got to be some wrecked Freightliner FL-series trucks out there in junkyards with that manifold, but finding them probably isn't easy.

HUH?????????? :--) :--) :--) :--) :--) :--) :--) :--) :--)

I bought that same manifold from the local Navistar dealer and it was $285. And they had it for me in three days! And I thought that was expensive!

Do you want me to get the number and see if I can get you one?

Thanks for the offer Don. I am currently located in Burlington Ontario Canada so this is part of the price difference and then I am sure the mark up by the local dealer makes up the difference between currency exchange. I will try my local navistar dealer and see what I get. One other thought I had, does the 24 v single fuel rail manifold fit the 12 v engine? This late model manifold may be easier to get even from dodge.

This comment is about DKarvwnaris comments on fordcummins. How right you are that they have alot of tall tails. I had called him about the 03 and 04 cummins he had acquired. Gave me a line of bull about the motors coming out of trucks being in a train wreck. They came from LKQ parts in the south from salt water damaged trucks. I had called about them. Now he wants to double what he paid for them and then charge extra for the accessories that were included with them. I don't mind someone making a buck but all the bull in his story I would not give him a dime of my business.

Hey Gents,

I posted in the 12v engine page for information on the manifold. Amazingly enougth another member had the manifold I am looking for at the right price. Looks like the heater core can remain untouched or at least I hope!

On The Road

At 11:45 pm last night I sorted out the last of the transmission valve body issues and now have all gears. The road test seen 85 mph and one cool sounding turbo. The van work is complete and I will post pictures as soon as I can find my camera patch cable.

A word of advice to anyone who owns an automatic transmission. Never ever add any of that snake oil that claims to make it shift better. Every valve in the valve body was stuck after sitting for the last year. After replacing the rear clutch pack and unsticking the governor I finially got to the valve body and the reason the rear clutch pack was chewed.

I did not cut the firewall of the van and I installed and wired the dodge computer to the ford wiring harness. Today's little road test is 700 miles up north for moose hunting.

My computer packed up the harddrive about mid project and I lost all my pictures so this is why no posting. I decided it was better to work on the van on the sunny days and fix the computer on the rainy ones.

Have a great day

Way to go, Marty! I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. So, did you have to modifiy the heater core box or relocate the heater, or did you end up with enough clearance from the turbo? Did you have to modify the engine cover in the cab to create clearance? Is the engine noise tolerable?

Andy

Thanks Andy,

I made the trip to Timmins and only has to drive 300 miles with no Overdrive.

Seems the overdrive valve in the transmission is sticking a little. Time to rip that valve body out for a final complete overhaul.

There was no modifications to the firewall or heater box as the Frieghtliner manifold was perfect. No mods to the engine cover either as this was measured and remeasured to make sure all fit with mininal cuts. There is some engine noise and when I have overdrive it is more than tolerable. Much like my Current 7. 3 diesel van! There is no comparison when it comes to pulling power for that cummins. Just push the pedal and hang on!!

Currently the moose hunt is on so I will have to update with pictures after we get a moose. This may take all week with these warm temperatures.

Regards

Marty

Marty,

I just came across this story. All I can say is outstanding job!!! :D :-laf

I always thought a Cummins powered 4x4 van was a good idea waiting to happen.

Glad to hear you got your Fummins runnin with a hummin Cummins - Post them pics

Welcome to the world of half breeds :D

Some Pics

Here are a few pictures of the Van, I can take picture of whatever you like. Also I need some help. My injection pump stopped returning back to idle by itself today and I had to install a return spring. The engine seems a little sluggish and I wonder if something is up with the governor. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Also I have a bit of trouble asking other people to fix things for me for money. If they can fix it why can't I?

Have a great day.
