Wow! That's a pretty sweet swap!

As someone who has spent a LOT of time under the hood and behind the 'doghouse' of a crapload of '90-'00 E-series vans... that thing looks REALLY easy to work on.

At least the oil pan won't rot out like all the other F*rd engines... :D

Matt

Thanks

The only thing that is really difficult to work on is the injection pump and right now it is acting a little strange. I checked out the Piers website and read all I could find. After disconnecting the throttle linkage from the injection pump it is clear this is an injection pump problem. When I installed the engine the pump would return to idle under it's own spring pressure. I am sure of this as I ran the engine before I had the throttle linkage finished. Now the throttle seems to flip over center and stay Wide Open Throttle or as you bring it back to idle it seems to have a slight amount of return spring pressure but not like it used to.

Otherwise both on and off road driving has been fantastic. The engine only sits about 4" over the front axle and this really has created a nice balance to the weight of the van.

pump problem

did you figure your pump problem out yet? mine is doing the same thing on my 8. 3. the one i put in place of the 3126 cat. my engine has been sitting awhile too.

Running well!!

I did not figure out the pump yet other than determining that the intercooler rubber connection was slipped off the intercooler tube I fabricated. Once I fixed this the power is back and the engine pulls and hauls really well. Since the engine is not missing and there is no problems with smoke or anything else I suspect the pump was sticking and now everything is free and ready to run. I have another 600 mile trip tomorrow morning towing a trailer with 2 tons of steel in it so I should find out just how good it is or is not. This whole engine swap experience has been fantastic thanks to this TDR membership. Thanks to all those who asked the questions and those that answered them. This information is absolutely invaluable when doing my first conversion.

Have a great day.

Marty

Marty- Glad to hear everything is going well!!! Also great to hear the trany problem didn't cost you huge $$$$. What did you land up doing for the intake? was the piece you got from me at all usefull? My project is put on hold for a few months to get some more $$$ and then come January it will be full tilt untill the smoke pours out:)

Good luck with the trip... Ryan

ps... how was the moose hunt?

Burnin Oil!!!

Fuel oil that is!

Thanks Ryan, no moose for the freezer this year yet but may try again in a few weeks when the weather is colder. For the intake elbow I fabricated one from 3 " tubing and 1/4" plate. The hard part was cutting the hole in the plate with a drill, hacksaw and a rat tail file. I would not cut the plate with a torch for fear of warping it and not getting a good manifld seal. As the for the transmission I pulled it all apart and installed a new rear clutch pack and added an Adams spacer to tighten things up. Cleaned up the valve body spools as all of them were stuck.

I pulled a trailer with 2 tons of scrap steel from my father's in Timmins to Burlington on 96$ worth of fuel. At 100 km/ hr or 60 mph she would not loose speed on any hills on the main freeway. Also the hit 150 kmh for the first time in history.

Hey Marty. Twelve years after your post, I stumbled upon it.. Since I'm contemplating the same conversion (E350 460 4x4, to 6bt), I'm curious to
hear how yours is is doing and if you'd be kind enough to share any advice?
I have yet to acquire the 6bt or a transmission, so my options are wide open..
Thanks in advance!
John..

John, Diesel Conversion Specialists in Kalispell, Montana has done a 95, 460 gas E350 conversion to 4x4 and Cummins. The 4x4 conversion was done using Ujoint Offroad kit. They don't sell a Cummins conversion kit due to difficulty of fitment but they will do a conversion in their shop.

Dennis
