Turbo charging Mercedes NA four cyl 240D motor.

4BT in a CJ5

Nissan 4x4 trucks from the early 80's have divorced transfers, I found out at the junk yard the other day. Now I'm thinking of putting a Mercedes 240D four cylinder in one. The 5 cyl is too long. Use the Mercedes 4 spd trans and it should be pretty easy. It looks like I might need a body lift to clear the front pumpkin, though.

Any thoughts?

Man, I have been thinking about this for the past 6 months! Sounds very do-able. To many other projects lined up though. Need to finish my buddies Samurai vw diesel conversion first. The 240d/stick combo is much harder to find than the auto although they are out there. On the bright side, the auto they use is bulletproof. Keep me posted if you do this.

How are you putting the VW diesel in the Samarai? Are you using an adapter plate with the Samarai trans? As an alternative to the Nissan I've been seriously considering a VW turbo diesel or TDI in an Audi quattro. I think this could be very nearly bolt-up.

I don't want to use the Merc auto because of the loss in power. The four speeds seem fairly plentiful as coupled to the 4 cyl's.

Did you read my post about turbocharging the 4 cyl Merc diesel? Any input?

He bought a adapter kit off of ebay. It included the adapter plate to bolt up the WV motor to the stock transmission, a modified flywheel, and some other stuff. He will also have to get a exhaust manifold out of a transverse mounted motor, his was a north-south mounted motor. Their is quite a bit of info on the net about this conversion. It will get him twice the torque and almost 3 times the HP of the stock 1. 3l.

Which engine is he using? Is it a TDI? or just a regular turbo diesel. I assume it is not a NA diesel as these had 52 horsepower.

1. 6l turbo out of a 1986 Quattro. Anything more and he would risk blowing up driveline parts. :) The owner of Petroworks has put a TDI in his yellow sammy. I hear the 1. 9 is also a strong choice also.

Well Brian! I see you have found the Mercedes Diesel list! Very sharp group of people. You will have your share of Purists that think you are committing blasphemy but the knowledge you seek is there. Just be persistent.
