Attn: BD Exhaust Brake owners, If you purchased one of their early brake systems that mount inline in the exhaust system just before the muffler, DON'T LOOK TO BD FOR HELP IF IT QUITS WORKING. They will readily admit that it was not a good design and it was doomed to fail from the begining.
I purchased mine on 8-17-94 for the whopping price of $1524. 38. I only use the truck to tow my trailer which I only do one major trip every summer. As of this posting It had worked only intermittently for the past year. When I finally got around to calling them last month, I was told by their spokespreson that the weak point was the spring in the Solinoid being overheated by the exhaust system. They did say they would sell me one of their newest systems that works off of vacuum (NO DISCOUNT), FAT CHANCE!.

The early brake was a poor desiqn. The sales staff does not have authority to offer you a discount on a new brake. Piers can help you with repairs on your old brake or a discount on a new vaccum brake. He usually comes in 10 am pst. If you can't reach him ask for Bill trans dept.

I just finished reading an article about the development of the BD brake. It was in the RV Northwest newspaper. I picked it up at a RV place we stayed at this weekend. Seems all of the development for the brake came from BD with no big manufacturer bucks. Since the 9 or so years since this development there have been major improvements and research especially with auto equipped trucks.

walmor, take Bill Kondolay's advice; call Piers Harry (or Bill Kondolay) at BD. . they will work with you. I have had nothing but exemplary customer service from BD! Recently, they went the extra mile for me, replacing a component with the revised version (at my request) for free. Keep in mind they didn't have to do this. BD is the kind of company I like to deal with, and I will continue to give them my business in the future. #ad

I posted this "Complaint" on 1-30-2000.
Now I have to withdraw any adverse criticism that I implied. The main statement that I made
and I quote "DON'T LOOK TO BD FOR HELP IF IT QUITS WORKING" is absoulty not true. Thanks to a quick response from members Bill Kondolay and John from WA. . Both responded to my "Post" and advised me to contact Piers Harry of BD and he well help. I also received an e-mail from Piers to contact him by phone and he will be glad to fix my Exhaust Brake free of charge. Piers also offered to sell me one of the NEW Exhaust Brakes at cost. I opted for the new Brake and was then advised by Piers to send the defective Brake to him and he still would repair it for FREE.
My Brake was WELL out of Warranty and Piers and the BD Company were not obligated to help me at all, but they bent over backwards to make me a "HAPPY CUSTOMER and CAMPER". Thanks go to the TDR Forum of knowledgeable people and Piers Harry of BD. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE BD COMPANY TO DO BUSINESS WITH.
