Fabricate jack screw brackets using a pipe hangar clamp, 3 each 1/2 inch nuts welded to pipe hangar housing 120 degrees apart, 3 short lengths of all-thread. Set weld nuts such that all-thread jack screws lay parallel to exhaust pipe and would push apart a coupling if similar clamp/backstop were bolted to other side of connection. No torching required to break loose, just load the jack screws fairly good, rap joint firmly with hammer and keep adding jack screw to push pipes apart. Also weld a nut to tail end of all-thread jack screw making it easier to use. Exhaust pipes can also just as easily be drawn together with same brackets and bit different ear configuration.

Haven't made a exhaust pipe set yet tho' fabbed similar custom application jack screw tools in my craft (retired elevator) and I know these will work well. It's a cold shot work routine all the way, very little hammer, chisel, torch, welder, just few small wrenches. Generic form is cylinder w/ 3 parallel legs. Be awhile yet, but will post pics of my cat back straight pipe work.

good idea

A picture or two would be really really helpful -

I get the concept and it should work great for the occasional home mechanic. Just clamp on either side of the joint and the long bolts are used to push the joint apart.

Summit Racing carries the one below for $40 below but it is limited to 2. 25" dia. so a home made unit like JimB1 suggests seems like a great idea to me. Kudos to JimB1.

Oo.

WC Thanx a ton. You hit it. Also, screw jacking apart 2 piece axle bearing hubs has the example of 1 hole set pushing and next hole set pulling, so should be possible to push & pull with a setup close to what you've shopped for us. My home made setup will split shorty piece of 4" pipe, weld small angle clips along splits which become flanges to thru bolt the 2 halves together thus clamping onto work. Weld nuts for jack screws on one half. The other half needs two ear types for push & pull. Push ear will be blank no-hole angel tab. Pull ear will be clearance hole angle tab that jack screw can reach thru back to weld nuts on other half for draw together. Before walking into salvage yards I have to put my wallet into time-lock safe!
