Will be undercoating my truck, was wondering if any of you have tried the undercoating systems from eastwood or whitney. If they are any better then the spray can undercoating that you get from walmart, which seems to wear away.

haven't tried those brands.

i use mar-hyde # 4211 rubberized under coating. comes in an 18 oz aerosol can. this stuff is great!! took about 8 cans to do the complete undercarriage, frame, springs, axles - everything on the old D250.

goes on easy, stays rubbery even after 2 years. i have used it on new and old vehicles. it is the best i have found for the price. if it does chip off, as can happen on the old trucks, i just touch it up with a light recoat.

a 12 can case is very reasonable. i have been getting mine from a local car-quest affiliate.

I used the kit from JC Whitney on both my '98 and '01. The kit I used had 4 qt. bottles that came with it. This stuff wasn't like the rubberized undercoating. It was a lighter viscosity and I believe it said on the MSDS sheet that it was something like "asphaltene". It was a mess to put on(dripping all over), but I coated the underside generously, and it seems to be holding up pretty good. I don't really know why I put it on my '01, being that it spends the winters stored in a heated garage.

Ever try the Por-15 products?

I did a bunch of research a while back on what to cover my undercarriage with. This stuff came most highly recommended out of 'em all, and I was digging deep. 'Course I haven't got around to doing it yet, but hope to someday soon.

It was HIGHLY suggested to wear a full hazmat jumpsuit with headsock, face protection and high boots and gloves because that stuff ain't comin' off your hide... .

BUT, this is a bigger job than the throw-away spray cans... . You'll need to clean the undercarriage, prep it with one agent, then paint it with the goods. Por-15 has specific agents for all three phases.

Good luck!

It depends on what you want to do and what you expect the undercoating to do-

I've used por-15 with just ok results - I've sand blasted the area and painted the area with por-15 , then have had rust pinholes show up - why - I don't know. This has occured on the back side of bumpers, and on the underside of a car. However, others said it works great.

Por-15 recommends not putting it over existing paint.

3-M - is a good rustproofing item - as well as others.

Do you want to just buy a can of stuff to spray on, or use it in a undercoating gun - like what eastwood sells.

However - when I called Eastwood about replacement wands - they don't sell them - just the kit - so when the wand gets clogged - tough luck.

At the time they didn't sell this gun:

- which may use the same thread as what the 3m guns have.

3M sells different wands for their guns - which means when the wands get clogged - just get another one - not the whole gun assembly.

They also sell the application gun:

I ended up buying an "Astro" brand gun - cheaper and use the 3m wands.

The wands allow you to spray in the doors, rockers, frame, etc without removing a lot of panels - or where you couldn't spray with a spraycan. You might have to drill holes to get the wand in - use rubber plugs to cover the holes. Don't forget to paint the edges of the holes to cover the bare metal (prevent rust).

That is what I do when I repair or restore a car.

Good luck!
