For those who don't like getting trans fluid
in your face I have the solution. Purchase the small plastic piston pump sold at Aid Auto stores. Add on a smaller dia hose which can reach down the dip stick tube to the bottom of the pan. You can pump out all the fluid (about 4 quarts) in a matter of mins. The pan can now be unbolted and removed with out the mess. There is still more old fluid in your torque converter. I have been told by an Amsoil tech after you replace the pan/filter and refill to remove the cooler return line, run the engine until you see clean fluid come out. Then add more fluid to the right level. That sounds like more mess so I just pump out/add fluid a few more times after the change. This beats drilling a hole in your pan for a drain plug.

Great tip,I'll use it next time. I already use much the same method for changing the hydraulic fluid in tractors, mainly because they hold 20+ gallons and a drain pan gets hard to handle with that much weight. I use an electric pump, it will be an easy matter to attach a smaller suction hose. Thanks.

Loosen the valve body bolts about 3 turns and you will be able to get 10-11 quarts out total. They are the 10 7/16" hex bolts. No more than 4 turns or something could fall out. Tighten and torque the bolts.

Bob,I think the type of pump grtespa is speaking of is the same type used on hand cleaners, lotion or shampoo. It is easy to connect a hose to this type for sucking out master cylinders, power steering reservoirs, etc. You most likely already have a pump in your bathroom that will work.

Thanks Illflem, I have a Mag/Hytec pan to install so this trick would work great! After that I can use the Mag/Hytec drain plug #ad

I bought the pump 4 years ago but it is still sold in auto supply stores. Its just a simple piston hand pump simular to the ones used on boats only smaller. Hope that helps ya.

These are all great tips. I just did mine and used a primer bulb from a boat motor and gas can. I bought 8ft of 3/8" I. D. fuel line and cut it in half, I then attached these sections to the primer bulb. This size fuel line fits in the transmission dipstick perfectly on my 98. It takes about 20 or so pumps to get it started, but once it starts pumping it doesn't take long. A special thanks to the people who suggested this, it works awesome!! It saves the bath in the transmission fluid if you spill.
