I have had my truck in the shop for he last month and finally had the used ECM installed today. They gave me a good deal on the used item and are willing to work with me on the bill so I haven't pushed them on the time. Well, after their test drive today they say all codes are clear and everything works great except... ... . the cruise. The light is on all the time but it will not set. There are no codes and they have no idea as they say the cruise is run by the PCM and the ECM should not have effected it.

Please guys... I am DYING here!!:{ I haven't had my CTD in a month and I think I might have forgotten how to drive it!

Any ideas as to why my cruise does not work?

What I know:

-no codes

-the "cruise" light is permanantly on

thanks in advance:eek:

Hey,

Cruise control speed is taken from the anti-lock sensor in the rear end, with that signal going through the ABS module, then to the PCM.

I'm not ABSOLUTELY sure, but I'd bet that the ECM would also need to calculate engine fueling along with shft patterns from the PCM. All I know is that the Cummins CanBus system communicates with about 6 modules.

I wonder if somehow the ECM is telling the PCM the cruise is on somehow... .

If I get a chance, I'll review the wiring diagram.

Sounds like they maybe used an EARLY '01 ECM that used a vacuum operated CC, and the late '01 used a CC that was controlled by the ECM electronically, as does the '02...

Diesel With Manual Trans.

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is no longer used for any Dodge Truck.

Vehicle speed and distance covered are measured by the Rear Wheel Speed Sensor. The sensor is mounted to the rear axle. A signal is sent from this sensor to the Controller Antilock Brake (CAB) computer. A signal is then sent from the CAB to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to determine vehicle speed and distance covered. The ECM will then determine strategies for speed control system operation.

What dos this mean? Is the ecm they sold bad?

Well, with yours being a standard transmission, it's more-than-likely that it is. I didn't read that in your signature before... . I know that with an auto (at least a 1999), it goes to the PCM also.

So, with what Gary said, along with Mopartech, I'd say it's bad. However, I'd talk to the shop where you had the work done and find out where they got it. Is it new, or out of a salvage yard? I'm not sure if one can get a brand new ECM.

i'm not sure you can use a used ecm, I do believe they have the vin burned into them, so maybe the ecm they got is out of a auto truck or no cruise truck, and yes the auto trucks run the cruise through the pcm because of the auto trans.

Well, the ecm they sold me is from a wreck of some sort. The shop is a cummins repair shop but they didn't tell me where the thing cam from except that it was from an engine core or something they were sending to Denver. The manager told me that this ecm was right according to part numbers. I'm not sure how they match those or anything, but I will sure tell him all that I have heard from you all and maybe that will give some more ideas.

I have been doing some searching on here and have come up with some interesting thoughts.....

- If the part #'s on the ECM match up, how could it be the wrong item?

- Is there an easy way to check the clockspring? When those go out do they just "suddenly" go?

- Anybody know of a better way to test why this thing is not working? (By better I mean CHEAPER!!!) I am already into it for $600+

"Match up" to what? ;)

IF the ECM #'s match up in the DC book, against the VIN # for YOUR truck, or are the same as to one you took off the truck, you SHOULD be OK - as long as the replacement ECM itself is also a good one.

Good luck, hope you find the problem - this electronic stuff can be maddening!

just because it has the same part number doesn't mean it has the same software programmed into it

I've been on the look-out for a spare ECM and PCM for my '02 with a manual transmission, and sure wish I had a list of exactly what numbers would work on my truck...

There seems to be different programming of California trucks vs some other states

Different programming manual transmission vs A/T

HO vs SO

And undoubtedly others I'm not aware of - makes it real risky to pay big bucks for a replacement computer... :(

OH - and I'm aware the ECM *can* be reprogrammed, but finding someone willing and able, and not wanting lotsa $$$ to do it, on top of what you already spent on the ECM, can be a pain...

Been there, TRIED that... :(

Just got off the phone with the repair shop and I was told the #'s match part # for part #. I have not seen it with my own eyes but have no reason to doubt them. I am thinking the ECM is bad and am going to ask for a refund and buy a replacement soon.

Gary,

Don't know if the attached file would help you any, but take a look.
