2001 2500 4x4 ETH/DEE ("H.O", 6spd)...

Pretty sure I have a dead ECM:
  • Starts and (seems to) idle fine.
  • When I actually press the throttle and hold it in one position, it acts as if the pedal is in random positions (engine RPMs go from idle to "racing" and everything in between).
  • Cruise control indicator in instrument cluster randomly turns on, as if I'd hit the on/off button on the steering wheel (I haven't touched it).
  • OBD-II intermittent connection - 3 different devices (Smarty, Scan Gauge II, Actron)
  • P0237 - MAP sensor voltage too low
  • P0122 - APPS signal voltage too low
  • P0123 - APPS signal voltage too high
  • P0117 - ECT sensor voltage too low
  • P0112 - Intake Air Temp Sensor voltage low
  • I also seem to recall P0341 (Camshaft position sensor signal)
  • And, the big one: P0606 - ECM failure
So, presuming it's a dead ECM, does anyone have a source? Or any particular places I should avoid?

I'm currently looking at "Nationwide Parts Distributors" http://www.npddiesel.com/cummins-1-plugs-ecms . Any experience (good or bad) with them?

If you’re interested in a used one, give this fellow a call, Mark Nixon, call or text 402-780-5127.

If not, I’d look into getting a reman from somewhere like O’Reilly’s that you know will stand behind it.

Hello. First time posting. I have a 2001 ram 3500 270000 miles. Had a year of great service before a rash of flat pedal issues..Still fight ing that..
ANyway here are some thoughts:::
Talk to john brian south of ECMtoGO.com. $995 exchange. 595 if repairable or less. I am debating sending mine . I have flat pedal issues . I think it is wiring .. SO I have to check grounds and other things before going that route. They seem to know whats happening but its like anything else see what you can find out before committing.. It seems to me that our particular ECM is pricy to about a grand...
One point you can check is the sensor positive and negative wires coming out of the ECM. AND all the associated ground points for those circuits. There are splices in both circuits and if you have moved the wiring harness much it would be a good idea to verify the wiring ...If the sensor power supply in the ECM is compromised then something caused it.. could be a shorted wire in any of the sensor circuits or the sensor... or.
Just some thoughts or ideas about where to look..
As far as the wiring if you have the repair manual all the info is there but it is hard to sort out..check the wiring section. I printed out the relevant pages and put them in a binder to help with the wiring checking. .. TDR is very helpful but you will need to read alot to find all the info.
Good luck with your problem.
FYI. I have put at least 4K into this truck and it is taking a toll on my gut... not ready to give up yet....
Regards. Mike.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies.

mikelutestanski: My truck was at a local, trusted shop for 3 weeks. They did check wiring, power supplies, and sensor voltages to/from the ECM. They finally concluded that it was the ECM, but their supplier was quoting $1100 (plus core) and a 2 week lead time.

BigPapa: I called Mark Nixon this morning (30 NOV). He was quite helpful, but doesn't have any ECMs available. He said he's been having difficulty finding them lately - even from wrecking yards - because they get grabbed up the same day trucks appear. He suggested Auto Module Source. He went on to say that he's heard of people parting out otherwise good trucks just because they can't get replacement electronics for the 24V.

rkressg: After getting a second mention for Auto Module Source, I called them this morning (30 NOV). They seemed knowledgeable, and I ordered an ECM. I expect to receive it next week (around Wednesday, 05 DEC). $895 for a reman ECM, plus $250 core.

I'll post an update after installing the ECM I receive next week.

Again, thank you all for your responses.

I recently used a shop out of Pennsylvania called AutoECMs (1-800-900-0194). They provided a powertrain control module for a Dodge Grand Caravan for me for about $350, including shipping. They came recommended to me from the local Chrysler/Dodge dealer and the dealer said that they had good luck with their work/product.

The internet can be a pretty wild place when searching for PCM/ECM modules. I see lots of claims for wonderful product for $200 or less. The websites may be appealing but one has no way to verify their quality except by trial. Good luck in your search.

Actually, AutoECMs in PA was the source that my shop mentioned above was trying to use. As of 3 weeks ago, they had none in stock and wanted mine for repair / rebuild. $1,100 with a 2-week lead time - presuming mine could be rebuilt. (Their web site does currently show a bunch in stock for a 2001 Dodge 2500 diesel + manual, but I don't know how accurate that is.)
