Got a friend that asked me to help him find a GOOD used ECM for a 98' 24V with manual transmission. I don't know much about his truck, other than what he has told me which was: (1)He bought it as is from a finance company as a repo. (2) It was not running when he bought it and it was believed to be a bad VP44. (3) HE replaced the VP44 HIMSELF(?) with a rebuilt one. (I questioned his knowledge about the procedure (i. e. , fuel line removal as two sets, correct position of arrow on key for the VP44, etc. ) and I am not sure if he did EVERYTHING correct. (4) He says that he is getting fuel to the injectors, but I am questioning that really. Maybe he is getting fuel up to the VP44 only?(5) He says it has been scanned twice by two different scanners and that it now throws codes indicating a bad ECM. This is when I got my first phone call about his problem(s).

Any ideas?

Anybody got a good used ECM for this truck? (If that is really what is wrong with it)

I recently replaced the heater core in my truck and when finished, it wouldn't start. After lots of diagnosing, I found out the ECM was blank. I took it off and took it to Cummins and they verified it was blank and they re-flashed it for $250. It now works again but for how long. This is not the first trouble I have had out of it and will be replacing it fairly soon.

I have an OBD II reader and it only came back with a connection error as though there wasn't anything there.

I also got one from the above place and it was less than half the cost of one from a dealer and there was no need to take it in to get flashed. Been working fine for over a year now.

I'll throw this out there again with ECM's. Contact Bob Wagner from this site. You're dealing with a member with a great reputation. He will get you the right ECM. Tell him the situation. He might offer you the ECM, you put it in, if it doesn't work send it back with a full refund. Nobody could tell me for sure if the ECM was dead on my brother in laws 98. 5. Called Bob, he sent one out and away we went. It was the ECM.

I agree that Bob is the go to guy when it comes to ECM issues, and he can send one out for testing (which is awesome), but I don't think he has replacement ECM's available from what I recall. His help is truly a great resource for us Cummins enthusiasts for sure. :D
