I am trying to decide if I want to take the settlement money and let them reflash the computer. On TDR and from friends they say that they had significant performance losses after the recall reflash. My question is, when I take the ecodiesel in for service (if I don't take the settlement). will they reflash the computer even if I don't want them too? In that case I might as well take the money. Has anyone here had experience with this? Thanks

Depending on where you live, if it's a EPA/CARB mandated fix like the VW fiasco you may eventually not be able to register the vehicle. In certain states VW owners that kept their cars were required to provide a proof of correction certificate to the license bureau.

Where do you live? If you live in any state that does not test Diesel emission, you can put a lock on the OBDII port to prevent the dealer from updating your truck. I have one on my truck and I have had my truck in for recalls but the dealer cannot access the OBDII port without my permission. So you can turn down any flash that the dealer wants to do. I have!

Look at GENO'S Garage for what they call a TUNE SAVER , which covers and locks the OBDII port. This fits all trucks from 1996 to 2020.

The dealer has a very specific procedure that must be followed to the letter to prevent them for being fined by the epa.If you opt out you have to sign paper to that affect

I have never signed anything in IL, to that effect. I have had several recall notices to update the ECM software after I had installed the Smarty in 2009. I put a OBDII port lock on right after I installed my Smarty. When I have gone in for other recalls the dealer said OK, and did what ever safety recall was required at the time. The service writer was not happy when he could not hook up to the OBDII port though. He said he needed information from the OBDII port to complete the service letter. I asked him what was needed and he said it didn't matter.

Early on some of the guys purchased a new ECM for around $500 at the time, and had it installed and flashed with the new software. Then they installed the old ECM and ran the pre recall tune. If your going to take the $3k might pay to use some of it for an ECM

Too bad Green Diesel is out!

Jim I am speaking about the eco diesel recall specifically. Not related to any other Fca product

Bob, I also own a VW Jetta DI 2.0L Diesel that was bought new in 2011. Nothing was ever signed on that vehicle either for emission compliance nor my older sons commuter car a 2012 2.0LTDI Golf that was traded in at 99.000 miles. It might be a Calf thing in IL diesel are fairly relaxed in emission compliance requirements. There is none!
