after the reflash of my pcm today to try to solve the hunting problem a 0118 code came up on the dealer's DRB (obdII). the mechanic said he didn't know where the ECT was and they were only on gas engines. that didn't sound right. the code is still there. any input is appreciated. thanks. scott.

They are NOT only on gas engines.

On the 24v they are right up front by the thermostat. I don't know where they are on the 12v, I'm sure someone does tho.

That would be my guess yes, but I am not up to speed on all of the 12v stuff since I don't have one.

Someone will most likly post and correct it if I am wrong.

I believe that this is a 2 wire sensor. It is located in the cylinder head, driver side, about mid-way back underneath the intake manifold "shelf" . It is difficult to see with the head on. This may be mis-information, but I think the wire colors are tan/black and dk. green/blk. The ECM controls several operations based on engine coolant temperature. This is where it gets its reading. Let me know if you need additional information on this sensor. Hope this helps.

The engine coolant sensor is supposed to be for use on EGR engines (diesels in california). In one section "fuel systems for diesel diagram it is classified as water tempature sensor (for IP gauge).

In the instrument panel sytems chapter it is refered as a sending unit.

On the v-10 engine it has seperate sensor and sending unit.

On the v-6/v-8/ diesel in insrument panel section sending unit apparently does both jobs.

A good multi-meter will tell you if any sensors/sending units are bad.
