Hi Guys, I'm new to this site, but not new to the CTD. I was a member back in 1998 and I really enjoy this site and the magazine. I'm on my third CTD (1998,2001,now 2003) and I have a quick question.

I recently installed an Edge EZ (level 4) along with the AFE Magnum Force intake. I can still get the filter-minder to drop down to 65% even with the AFE system installed. Are any of you finding this to be true? I realize that the engine is nothing more than an air pump, and I plan on adding the 4" exhaust shortly for more air to pass through. Did any of you notice a change when you did this? In looking at all of your rigs it looks like many of you have this same combo. I'm just thinking that maybe the AFE system is not capable of getting all the air this engine needs.

I'm looking forward to speaking with many of you in the future.

Thanks,

Tim

Mine pulled the filter minder down to 65% bone stock with only 200 miles on it!. It started out doing it to 35% then just got worse after 700 miles on the motor. I later installed an EZ box and a AFe drop in and on level 2 and sucked it down all the way  I think my minder is bad lol. I now have a custom intake on and run the EZ on level 3... still kills the filter minder. I'm about to see how far I can throw it :) I can keep an eye on the filter myself :p

I think most everyone with an '03 is pulling it down to 35% stock. Wether its in a bad position or the stock box is just a POS I'm not sure. From what I have read on here what you are seeing is normal.

On the 300 mile trip home from the dealer the day I bought mine it got pulled down to 35%.

A couple of weeks ago I cut a 4" hole in the bottom and put a 4" drainage elbow down and facing the front. no more droppage:D

Maybe thats what I should have done to the stock air box in the first place instead of going with the complete AFE system. Thanks for the input.

The more fuel, the more air you will need.

We learned that the factory filter minder is not very good nor is it needed with our system.

The Ram Air 3 with the filter minder on a stock truck will pull it to 100%.

Its like the way a garden hose works to suck up the fluid in the bottle when your fertilizing the lawn or spraying weed killer.

There is so much velocity of air going past the factory filter minder that the spring in it is just too weak to be accurate with our system and I venture to guess that its the other way around on a stock air box. The stock box is ... inadequate. It needs more air.

Putting the hole in the bottom may be the correct balance for stock power but once you have all the air coming in from the front and the fender inlet, filter minder is negated.

Besides, its pretty easy to see if the fiter needs cleaning with our system.

Sorry to get off the topic and onto the RAM AIR 3. However, it has given us an interesting learning curve about air flow, even more then the Scotty Air II. Quicker acceleration times, lower egt, faster spool up and cool down as well as some claims of improved mileage. The more air you can give the engine the better it performs.

Have fun trying the different options, just make sure that the filter in the factory air box is sealed nicely around the edges.

hint hint.
