1st, I love this website and my wife hates it

2nd, Can I use an Edge EZ with my stock 47re without junking my transmission with only 11000 miles on it? I know I would be better off to upgrade my transmission, but I can't get everything at once. I pull a 9000 lb. 5th wheel. Thanks for your input in advance.

Ez

Don't you have a 48RE? I think it's a crap shoot. Probably be ok but it's really hard to say. I would think that if you were to upgrade at least your valve body for higher line pressures you would be in a bit safer position. I held off until after I did my trans but many here run an EZ with the OEM trans... ...

You have to ask yourself... Do you feel lucky? I knew better but when I bought mine I was close to 90,000 miles so it's really like comparing oranges to apples! I'm sure someone will chime in. Good luck.

Same here, she says were all a bunch of Cummins cyber geeks!, just mumbled something about turbo pocket protector...

I think it depends on how you drive and maintain it. If you don't race it and service it every 15K I say go for it. A fella I know with an 02 47re has an EZ with no trouble and he uses his for a service truck.

Thanks guys, I've asked guys around here and they act like my truck has the plague. As soon as I mention the 47re they act like I should start looking for it to just fall out of the truck at any moment even with stock power. I guess it's reputation precedes it.

I ran my SO/47RE w/ EZfor almost 20,000 miles. I had no problems so to say of. The only reason I bombed the transmission was becasue I did not like the soft shifts the 47 had. Plus I wanted to put some more power to the ground. I gained almost 10 hp from doing the transmission work. As long as one drives normally, not putting the pedel to the floor all the time they should be all right. Even a stock truck with no mods what so ever will fail if the driver drives in the truck day to day hammering it every chance he/she gets.

Has anyone else come across a 03 Dually with S/O and the 48RE transmission. I have one but. But nobody else has seen one. Good luck with your 47.

47re 48re

I guess I may be a bit confused..... I thought in 03 they went to the 48RE AT. Apparently I was mistaken. Oops, my bad.

Only the H. O. 305/555 2003 came with the 48RE... All the S. O. auto rigs are 47REs... I think is was a mid-year option when the H. O. became availiable w/automatic

That is wrong, I have a '03 SO with the 48RE, it was listed right on the sticker. What determines which automatic trans came with the SO is the build date.

Yes just drop the pan when change the transmission fluid and crank the pressure up 3 turns. Get someone to show you how.

I don't know what variable determines if you have the 47 or 48re. I do know that my window sticker states that I have the 47RE.

JBlock (or anyone), I have the new ISSpro gauges and getting ready to install them. I will have the transmission pan off in order to install the Temp sender. It sounds like I should turn the pressure up while I'm in there. Can anyone give me some specific instructions of what to look for and what to turn. I'm asking these questions because I have not seen the inside of the pan. It may be obvious what to turn, but I want to know for sure. Will turning the pressure up hurt anything? or does it only help.

Sorry for the questions, but I'm new this arena and I have came to respect the advice you all give.

Very early 03's had the 47re, when I was shopping for my truck I saw both 47's and 48's on the lot. And that is in CA where all trucks were the SO in 2003. I am sure they were just using up supply

My son has the 47 in his truck, with the edge box. The trans lunched big time. He left the box on with the new trans for awhile but said it started to feel funny when it shifted so he removed it. No problems since, but then again he may drive it like he stole it. It may be the luck of the draw in how you treat it with a load on it.

Good point and also another good point for a box with "in cab" adjustment.

My box stays off most of the time and when I crank it up its always when my foot is in it so trans pressures will be higher.

Its pretty hard on the trans to cruise around light footed with the power turned up.
