Well the time has come to buy a chip. I've got a 01' 24V, 6-speed 4X4 with 275inj and a new head/exhaust gasket, new valves and seats. The beast has been running great and man handles the trailers I pull. Now I want to have a little fun and blow some smoke. What's every ones opinoin on the Edge Comp and Smarty responsiveness, ease of operation and fuel milage? I thought I was sold on the Edge Comp, but I keep hearing about the Smarty. Is there something I should be looking at with the Smarty? JCH. :-laf:-laf

Responsiveness advantage Smarty

Power avantage Comp

Ease of operation Comp (no downloads to change programs)

Fuel Mileage ??? MAYBE smarty on the mileage program?

Price advantage Comp

The smarty adds the seat of the pants wow factor and the smoke if you want the visual. The comp is one of the best if not the best all around box for your 2nd gen 24v IMHO. Easily adjustable, smooth power, adds more power than the Smarty (with the pump tapped). You would like both.

Made 545hp on a comp tried a smarty and it made alot more smoke and throttle response, but the comp was still a better all around power/performance box.

I have a Smarty and an Edge Comp stacked and it works great. I use the Smarty stand alone for towing and both stacked for maximum performance. The wire tap on the fuel pump works great with the Smarty. You may need to budget for a new clutch if you run both power adders. The Smarty alone in level 8 made more power then my clutch could handle. You will also need a FASS system or at least an upgraded lift pump with a Comp or Smarty setup.

Two different animals. The Smarty is a programmer, while the Comp is a power adder.

The Smarty is far better IMHO. It gives you the ability to read engine codes and reset them, allows you to adjust your speedo if running larger tires, cannot be traced by the dealer, has multiple settings from stock to snap your head, has a half power setting for emission testing (no smoke), built in high idle during cold weather and you can download upgrades (free) from their website.

The only negative to the Smarty is it can't be adjusted on the fly.

I've had both, the ONLY bomb on my truck that will never be for sale, Smarty!

The Smarty improves daily driving and performance incredibly. Your truck will build boost faster, so off the line it feels like a gasser! I did not get that kind of response from the Comp.

The Comp and Smarty stack well, but the best stack is a TST with the Smarty. That way you use the timing from the Smarty and get the fueling from the TST. By the way this is the recommended stack from Marco, the inventor of the Smarty.

No choice in my book. Have fun!

I've got a 95gpm FASS, Like it. Does the Comp smoke at all? Sounds like the Smarty is the first step then maybe the Comp or TST. What does TST stand for? Does Smarty have good customer support? Sure appreciate the feedback. JCH.

If you are going to tow with this combination, you should probably not add timing built in. The HO engines have higher compression and possibly more static timing. Some have lost head gaskets when pulling.

Don't know what TST stands for, but it's based out of Columbus (exit at Walesboro, IN, just south of Columbus) on the opposite side of I-65 from the engine plant. Mark, the owner, worked for Cummins for 33 years as an engineer. I got my Smarty from TST. Picked it up at the office, and got to talk with Mark.

I'm not looking at towing with any of the programmers turned on. I'm very happy with my set up currently for towing. I may play around with the controllers on light loads, but my current set up works just fine for pulling. Fuel milage is less than spectacular 9-11mpg but I'm told that's to be expected from 24V rebuilt valve trains. Takes 30-40K before they break in. I sounds like you guys have talked me into a smarty. Thanks, JCH. :D

I have both the Smarty and the Comp along with an Original FASS 150. I like them both and when combined the WOW factor is huge:rolleyes::):D

As already been said, the Comp will give you on the fly adjustability and the Smarty gives you the low end with the Comp working the top end.

Either way you will have fun. I say get em both :D:D:D:D
