Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Edge comp year differences/compatability?

I've seen a few used Edge Comp boxes in the classifieds, and would like to save a couple hundred bucks. However, I haven't seen any used ones for a '99. Would it be possible to somehow make a 2001 Edge Comp fit on my '99? Is the wiring only different, or are there actual programming differences? If the latter, has anyone sent their Comp in to Edge to get it changed/updated to another year? How much did that cost?

No the 01-02 will not work on a 98. 5-00 it will set off a code.
