I've been reading a lot of information about the EZ box. Some people are telling me that the EZ will eat up my clutch??? I have an 2001. 5 with the 6spd HO 4x4. Will my clutch take the power increase. With the exception of the wide open 4" exhaust and K&N intake the truck is pretty much stock. The miles are low, about 30k, but I do tend to drive it hard. Also Edge makes claims of mph increases. Anyone out there seeing any increases? I would love to see an increase as fuel isn't getting any cheaper.

Take what you read with a grain of SALT. I have 115,000 turns + now and I have a 2001 HO 6 Speed with the original clutch and brakes. I've been running a Edg Comp for around 60 or 70,000 I think now. It's not the equipment, its the driver that determines how things will last. ;) My current cross country trips to Idaho from Portland Oregon for 715 miles yields 22. 78 mpg. Once again it is dependent on the driver. The equipment is cablable when used in a responsible way. :D ;) ;)

My clutch held up for about 24,000 miles hauling 13,000 lbs in the summer every weekend. I didn't hurt the clutch untill hunting season with 10,000 lbs in 4X4 trying to get setup and also getting out after more snow. So in short it was driver error, guess I was too hard on it but it wouldn't last now anyway :). Just like Mundgyver said "The equipment is cablable when used in a responsible way". But on the flip side of that coin maybe you'll get lucky maybe you won't never know till you try ;) .

I installed an EZ and 275's on the same day. My clutch held until I had a heavy load with the cruise set (I don't hot rod or it would have killed the clutch long before this). I hit the bottom of the hill, the power came on hard and fast and the clutch let go. If I wouldn't have had the cruise set I would have been fine.

I think you will be alright for a while IF you stay out of it at low rpm. The low rpm torque is just too much for the stock clutch when it's abused.

We tow a 13,500 lb 5th wheel that puts us on the road at 21,180 lbs GCW (21,500 lbs GCWR). The stock clutch lived with the EZ just fine - until the day that I put in the injectors. Running empty, the stock clutch slipped when nailing the throttle at 1800 RPM in 5th!

You can keep the cruise from comming on hard with the Edge by installing an adjustable needle valve in the vacuum line and turning it almost off. This has the effect of making the cruise softer in engagment and reduces the surging. That what I did to my rig. Combined with the Exhaust Brake, I can hold my speed to within 1/2 mph up hill, down hill and on the flats with no surging at all. Plenty of power.

No slippage yet:rolleyes: I have ran a Ez from 3000mil. es to 22000, then added RV275's till 49000 then upgraded to a Comp Drag and have put 5000 more miles and 370hp and 868ftlbs torque down with this without a real hard slip that I have noticed but the Southbend OFE is on the way because now it's just a matter of time, I drive hard and occasionally a 3rd gear burnout:D (well it slipped once doing that on a real sticky road:( ) but the Ez was no problem.

I'd consider replacing that K & N with an aFe or factory air filter. Read the article by Jim Anderson in the most recent issue of the TDR and find out why.

You will find there is a lot of differece in the stock clutches between trucks. Some will hold quite a bit more power and some won't hold just the ez. Mine held with a comp in ez mode and dd2's but when I tapped the wire, the clutch was toast by the end of the day. I don't think mine would have held up to the injectors and comp in ez mode for a lot of miles but I think it would have been fine with just the comp in ez mode. As said above too, alot has to do with the driver. To make one last, let the clutch fully engage before pouring the fuel to it, and slip it as little as possible on take off.

It will depend on driving habits and GVW. My 01 6er has slipped the clutch at 38000 GCVW with my right foot on the floor in 4th and 5th gear. Under normal weight conditions theres been no problem yet.

I agree; driving style has a lot to do with how long a clutch will last!

My first mod was the Edge EZ - two days later I had to demo to a friend what it can do and bingo :{ there goes the clutch! Now if I was not pushing it ... . I might have lasted a little longer, so just stay  if you can!

But if you are like most of us here ... you'll get the clutch, the injectors the ... . the ... . and then you want to upgrade it all again ... and again ... and ... And why upgrading if you can't use all that power

Have fun. Csaba

My stock clutch held up fine with the edge comp (wire tapped) but instantly went south when the injectors were added. I couldnt turn the box on 1X5 or I would slip badly trying to pass on the highway.

Who cut the hole in your roof? Nice looking job!

The bottom end hit is what kills clutches. Move the jumper to the tamest setting and the clutch has a better chance of living.

Also, driving style is the SINGLE biggest determinant. Mine stocker is still holding 382rwhp and has been for a year. The new EZ (replaced under warranty) seemed to slip it, but I was hallucinating-- it still holds. I guess when it slips, you will KNOW it.....

It helps if you always start in 1st gear.

Biggest thing for me when I am pulling, is to start in first and let the clutch fully engage before giving it throttle. Then just let the clutch fully engage with each gear before more throttle. Key is not to force the power. When pulling, I'm not in a race. It's nice to have the extra GRUNT if I need it, but its not necessary. ;)
