oil pressure at start-up??

LOL ,well the way I read it I thought is was going to both change pressure and timming, where the EZ does just pressure.

But when I read it again it says just change fueling, but how can they increase fuel with out changing the pressure? So I assume it will be an EZ box along with timming changes.

Is it a good idea to use an EZ Edge box on a SO with a 47RE or would I be asking for trouble with the transmission due to the extra power?

So I guess BOMB the transmission first if I were to do this, huh? I knew I should've passed on the ext. warranty for the truck and got it on the boat motor instead. The boat costs lots more if the powerhead goes BOOM!

:{

Of course hindsight says get the HO with the 6 speed... Damn that hindsight!

Thanks for the input!

For a box that only raises fuel rail pressures, the dyno numbers look very good, and actual usage empty and while towing is a very big improvement, even on the HO.

I've put more miles on mine towing than empty so far, it was a noticeable difference. Made one trip from Phoenix to LA to deliver a truck, about 14K in tow, without the box, not too bad. On certain grades, it was apparent, stock HP wasn't enough. But with the EZ on just level 2, it was an improvement. This past weekend, made another trip to pick up and deliver another truck past Yuma, this time with the EZ on the highest setting, much better results. Even on the short climb into Yuma, it pulled it with ease.

Whether to put one on the stock auto, I guess that would depend on your usage of the truck. How many people put them on their stock 98. 5-2002 24V's?

Fred, any change in MPG running the box?

How's life in Arizona? Ever going to come back to a dyno day or BOMB party in the NW again? I remember meeting you at BD Dyno Day once (I think it was there), that was a couple years ago :)

Vaughn

Hey Vaughn, one of these days, I'll be back up in the cooler Pacific NW.

So far mileage has improved, especially while towing. I'm testing some other items, but the time with just the EZ on did see an increase. The most noticeable is the lowend torque between 1500-2000. The truck will get up through the gears very quickly, without even trying hard.

EZ

I have EZ installed on level 2. My first test pulling 15000 LBS 5er, EGT was heading up to 1300 deg F in fifth gear 30 LBS boost when I backed out of the throttle, at 3000 RPM. Then I added 4" down pipe and 5" from there to rear bumper. My next pull with 5er was EGT 1200 deg F and 32 LBS boost at 3000 RPM with no other changes. I am delighted with the truck. TBOB

Re: EZ

I was talking to friend yesterday who has an '02 with the Edge EZ. He said that there were three settings on the unit and that a stock truck should not be set higher than setting number 1. He said that's what he was told when he bought the unit. How true is this?

I don't think it would really matter as the setting only affects when the added fuel comes on with regards to boost pressure. The overall power added does not change only how much boost it takes to engage it.

True, the 98. 5 to 2002 EZ's are not the same as the 2003. Settings 1-3 dictate at what boost level the fuel comes in. And depending on the truck, transmission and usage, which level you'd set it on.

Spending more time with the 03 EZ on highest setting. Overall with the 5 inch exhaust and the Airraid filter, EGT's are doing ok. But more fuel is in the near future.

I'd like to get one without adding gauges so it would be nice to know what level I can set it at without worry about excess EGT's. I have a stock truck with aFe filter only.

I have said before that EGT's are very managable on level 4. I had to pull 18,000 lbs uphill rowing through the gears to hit 1250*. I wouldn't think you would see any egt problems. Cool down on these trucks is instantanious. I mean in less than a minute I am at 275*.

Just to follow up on the EZ a little.

I ran my first full tank of fuel through the truck with the EZ installed. I did mostly hwy but hauled a horse trailer for 60 miles with three head in it too. The trip computer said 19. 7 mph which I felt was a little generous. Average calculated mileage before the box was a consistant 15. 8. My wife drives the truck to work and back 250 miles a week. Then on the weekend she will haul her horses. With the EZ installed I averaged 17. 9. That's up 2. 1 mpg. Who would of thought putting a box on a truck would even up the rising fuel prices.....

Is there something that states what setting you should set it based on the above? Or, is it a "try it out, see what happens" kind of thing?

Clutch consideration...

I might be thinking out loud, but did they change the clutch at all in the NV5600? If not, some of you running the EZ might be at or near the limit for hp/tq of the stock clutch. Has anyone had any problems with slipping or anything yet?

Got a friend that just bought an '03 last week, and I can't wait to turn him to the 'Dark Side'. It's his first diesel and he's lovin it.

EZ on Level 3

I'm running on level 3 with an empty truck and clutch is holding. As strong as it's running right now, I'd be a little leary of pulling heavy with my stock clutch. Level 2 might be a good place to start out pulling to get a feel for the stock clutch. IMHO. EGT's at 3000rpm in 5th + 6th gear are at 1200 degrees. Boost is 25# with boost elbow. This seems a little low to me. Mybe I need a load to get more boost. I've check for leaks and have found none.

For what it's worth. I was told by Edge Products that I should be putting down 335 hp and 680# of torque at the rear wheels on level 3.

Wayne.

Parshal, yes, if in doubt, start at the lowest and work your way up.

Eric, yes, the 03 clutch is slighly different, Peter from SBC has evaluated a stock one, and it can handle about 35 more HP than the earlier ones, somewhere around 350 HP, I believe is what he said in another clutch thread.

wanderson, I've pulled 14K for about 3000 of my total miles so far and the clutch is doing ok. This is all on level 4. As long as your technique is good, don't slip it, it should be okay for now.

I'm adding some DD injectors real soon, and will punish it even more. I know it's a matter of time, but I'm going to push the clutch until it gives up.

But right now, it isn't even hinting of not liking it.
