Hello,

I was looking at the new Edge EZ module for the '03 HO/48RE. Before I make the purchase or go with another brand, I'd like to get some feedback from those who have bought it. For example, does it change the trans shift settings/characteristics? Do you get a lot of black smoke at wide open throttle? Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ryan

The EZ for the new trucks does not add any smoke. It only raises common rail fuel pressure. It will not effect your transmission. I really like my EZ. It has a definate SOP feel. Go for it. Just install an inline trans temp guage. Also install Pyrometer and boost guages.

You will need them sooner or later. Go with a boost guage that reads at least 40 PSI. You will be able to hit close to that at any time.....

Hey BrandonJ - out of curiosity what setting do you have your EZ on, and have you experimented with different settings? Did you run the EZ before you got your AFE? Ive been thinking about getting the AFE but I'd like an opinion of how it works.

Thanks. Ive been running my EZ on level 2 which seems great, Im a little gunshy of the transmission to try anything higher.

Ryan, I have a guy here in Phoenix that we installed the DD DPM(EZ)on his very new HO/48RE. We then proceeded to take it for a test drive.

This truck had about 5,000 miles on it.

Let's just say that it woke that truck up, real nice like. No smoke at WOT at all. The transmission seemed to handle it just fine until he decids he wants more power.

I'd say you'll like the EZ(or DD DPM) on your new HO/48RE. But get some miles on it first before going too nuts.

Greg, Very nice numbers with the 2001, what do you think the 2003' (hers) does on the dyno? What is an air raid filter?

Any ideas how the 48RE holds up without transmission upgrades with the EZ? I'm contemplating a dually myself.

Thanks, JRG

I also have the aFe and I've run mine on all levels. I can't say that I noticed any difference before or after the aFe. I've found that I like level 3 best. There's a large gain over level 2 (15 HP jump) and only a 10 HP jump to level 4. Level 5 and 6 are nice, too but I'm a bit leary of that much power.

I get 18. 1 mpg on level 2 and 18. 7 on level 3, consistently.

How much does the EZ cost? What others are out there? How much power can be made with everything else stock on an HO engine?

Will they slip the torque converter clutch on a new automatic when set at the max.

Will they make smoke if we want it?

Can different injectors be put in these engines?

Sorry if all this has been answered before, but I'm just browsing over here and contemplating an '03.

They can be found for around $500 and they add between 30 and 70 HP at the rear wheels depending on the setting.

I'm not sure about the torque converter.

I haven't been able to make more smoke with mine.

Yes, you can replace the injectors.

I have, once--starting up an on-ramp at the West end of Grand Junction, with the EZ on "6" and 14,580 lb GCW, I glanced in the rearview mirror and saw a small cloud of black smoke behind me. I don't know if I was lugging a little when I started accelerating up the ramp--that's the only plausible explanation I can think of.

Thanks for the all information everyone! I've decided to go with the model that lets you adjust the power setting on the go.

Thanks again,

Ryan

Well I got the Edge EZ in last night, only went for a short spin but I have to say that I don't see this big increase in power that some are claming. I guess maybe I am too use to big horse 440's and the such. Also whats the deal with the boost elbow being too long and you have to grind some off the end of it to thread it in? Did anyone else have this problem?

I did notice that the RPM's want to hang more when you shift, result of more boost? I do only have it set on level 3 right now and not 4, I am hoping to notice more power when pulling something.

Mo_Mud - What I notice is it roars through 3rd and 4th much faster, 2nd is still under boosted yet once it comes on its time to shift. SOP is that it works and it wakes up the truck when passing and running the hills.

Though my clutch doesn't really slip with the truck empty, it does loaded. I think I'll see the difference when I tow next week with my new SBC clutch from Fred Swanson, which will be here monday, won't it?

I did notice some light smoke at 29 degrees when starting that I didn't have before, but it cleared once the temp guage started to move.

What I want to know is, on level 3/4, and the elbow in, how will the temps react when I load the truck to 10240lbs, and my trailer is at 10100lbs (20340 lbs GCW) for the summer trip to Alaska?

Well when I am loaded up it will be around 28,000# gcvw and want to try and run level 4.

Right now I have no EGT guage so no tow for right now. I think I am going to break down and order a X-Monitor next week, going to get a different air box also.

How did your boost elbow fit?

Its still in the bag in front of me. I'm going to drop it in when I change clutch out, I must resist the urge to fry my clutch until the brown truck shows up with the new one so the trailer remains parked.

I have run with backhoe and trailer weighing in at 24,000 lbs plus the truck 7500-8000 lbs. That is in upwards of 31,500 GCVW. Only hit 1200* on the steepest hill and pulling as hard as I could to get there. 4th gear WOT. You will have no problems pulling 22,000 combined weight.
