Ever since I got my new '06 this past weekend I have been wondering about the proper operation of the elec. shift 4x4 in my truck. I have not tried putting it in 4x4 mainly because I am confused about the wording of the position of the switch. Is "4 LOCK" the 4x4 Hi gear position and obviously the "4 LO" is the 4x4 low position?? If so, why do they name 4 Hi, "4 LOCK?"

Also, how does that neutral button work that looks lilke a reset button on a basic stereo deck?? Whats up with that anyway?

One last question, has anyone junked the electric shift and bought the linkage for the manual TC shift like in the Big Horn edition trucks?? I would assume it is possible, so if anyone has any info on that, please fill me in.

Thanks, Joe

Don't let the switch freak you out :{ It works just fine. I had the elec button on my '05 and now on my '06. I have never had any problem with it nor has anyone else that I am aware of.

I suspect they chose 4 lock over 4 hi to keep people from thinking they can run 4 hi on dry pavement. 4 lock sounds a little more "serious" and probably avoids some confusion for those becoming accustomed to all of the all wheel drive or full time 4wd vehicles out there that can be run in 4 hi all the time.

So yes, 4 lock is 4wd, high range, and 4 lo is self explanatory. I haven't tried the neutral and they probably make that one confusing on purpose so people don't select it. Doing so at the wrong time means the truck rolls away without them

Thanks guys, and yes I did read the owners manual from cover to cover, and was amazed, as I said in another thread, at how the manual to my $40K truck has very little illustrations and explainations that resemble the switches and what not. It's like it is a '04 or '05 manual reprint with the '06 labeling on it. I was just asking cuz their is no good explaination of "4 Lock" being the 4 Hi position or not. :D
