Dealer says it exists but I have never been able to locate. I've been told that it is at the back of the valve cover
but there is nothing there. HELP

Dealer is evidently clueless, go somewhere else, QUICKLY!!! The 5.9's never had an external EGR, it was in-cylinder and no pieces\parts to fix.

Lots of good things go along with the in-cylinder EGR. There is also no need to cool the EGR gases, so no plugging of the EGR cooler; no soot buildup in the intake tubes, turbo, intercooler, etc., and no need for expensive valves, sensors and control systems since the ratio of EGR is always fixed. And being fixed is probably why it isn't good enough for the newer emissions standards. Oh well.

BTW, can anybody tell me, did the in-cylinder EGR begin in 2003 with the common rail, or did it start in 2004.5?

Edit: Never mind, I found this:

I have an 04.5, and under the plastic cover on top of the engine is a crankcase vent filter. This may be what they were refering to. I took mine off and cleaned it with cleaner and put it back on.Genos also sells them.

Emission changes always happen Jan 1 of the calendar year, thus the 2004.5 models. The combustion bowl ( the top of the piston) was changed with this model to meet the next wave of emission standards. The horse power was also bumped up to 325 from 305. With this "internal" changes Cummins didn't have to add an external EGR valve or cooler. You can tell an 04 vs an 04.5 by several ways. Look at the date of manufacturer. If it was built in the calendar year 2004 (anything after Jan 1 2004) then it is a 2004.5. The 2004 models came out in the fall of 2003. The 2004.5 and newer all have the fan shroud mounted to the engine NOT the radiator. This gives a tighter clearance for cooling. The turbo is different ( bigger exhaust pipe as well) and the injectors are different also.
